Wiki and Forum Policy - General Discussion

Go To

Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.

This thread is for discussing the following topics:

  • Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
  • If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.

This thread is not for any of the following:

  • Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
  • Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts (reply to the relevant moderator via PM).
  • Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread in this forum).
  • Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote  or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages").
  • Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread and other banned OTC topics is here. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
  • Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here).
  • Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes', as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Query Wishlist, and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread.
  • Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
  • Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
  • Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread for discussing inactive users.

Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

I mean, yeah that's just being lazy. That's not a case of not knowing what to do, that's just choosing to be unproductive. While in general I advocate for removing examples if the situation is unclear, in this scenario it's just silly to delete it outright (unless maybe it was a ZCE or something, in which case there's no point to move it).

Though like I said, sometimes I can find places to move examples to if the context makes it obvious, but sometimes I can't. If someone recognizes that a trope is misuse but is genuinely unaware of how to fix it, I don't think that should be held against them even if it's not TRS cleanup. IMO too many people default to trying to hide obvious misuse in case it can eventually be fixed, which to me feels like the opposite of what should be done.

yeah i get people being unsure, but in those cases where ive seen where people were unsure where to put it, they would put up a "deleted this trope, if anyone has a better idea, please add it elsewhere" edit reason

whereas ive been told by delete-happy editors that "it's not their responsibility" to move misplaced tropes. does not seem productive at all, especially when copy + pasting is a thing

i think a policy for moving tropes clearly in the wrong page might work best + putting an edit reason for deletion if the editor is unsure where to put it as well as cut down on weird hostility or excuses that it is not an editor's job to clean up the wiki, but how would one go about adding to wiki policy?

related to the TRS discussion, i believe someone brought this up before but a policy of a standardised "trope has been disambiguated, see (link) and use the correct trope if applicable, do not readd the original trope" canned edit; let me know if that should go to TRS discussion though

[up]We already have "Trope was cut/disambiguated due to cleanup" as one of the default edit reasons. Anybody is free to do the rest themselves, in their own time.

Well, these editors are wrong if they think that moving misplaced examples to the right place isn't their responsibility. It's just as much (or as little) their responsibility as deleting them.

[up][up]yes, but the ones that include a link and a reminder to look at the disambiguated page help far better than the default "page has been cut/disambiguated", if just to cut down on copy-pasting time. the "cut/disambiguated" edit reasons now are far better than previous edit reasons where it implied the trope going through TRS was cut completely without any indication that TRS had voted to act on it

tbh im not sure why having a better canned edit reason is considered too time consuming for TRS, but ill take it to wiki talk

edit: thread is here

[down]hmm, didnt know auto fill was removed. that said, i was under the impression once TRS acts on a trope, the editors on that thread prioritise wick cleanings for that trope before moving on to the next. copy + pasting for one specific trope doesnt seem bad, unless most TRS editors prefer to work on multiple threads at once

It's not necessary too time consuming but unless such an edit reason gets added, people would need to retype that every single time thanks to the loss of auto fill. It just doesn't seem feasible to require a specific edit reason format

I'm a bit late in responding to this post regarding this thread's header contradicting itself regarding what kind of policy discussion is allowed (it appears to have been overlooked at the time), so the first sentence of that bullet point regarding what not to put in this thread was changed from "General policy discussion" to "Discussion about changing or implementing policies" to make it more clear about when/whether to use this thread or Wiki Talk.

Can the US Politics thread please be unlocked? It's been over two months now, I don't think anyone cares about Kissinger's death anymore (the event which caused it to be locked).

I have a question about the Republican Primary that I'd like answered.

The U.S. politics thread was not locked for a singular issue. It was locked because the thread itself was continually an issue and will remain locked until we have something in place to help like the slow mode. There are many other websites for talking about politics.

[up] Yes. The mods are getting fewer hollers about OTC and having to thump/intervene less often in the forums. There's probably a slight decrease in forum suspensions, too, although many are linked to multiple threads.

Any answer on a political topic will be inherently biased. It couldn't be handled outside of a thread where politics can be discussed.

Before I go fixing indentation on a bunch of pages, I want to double check that I've got it right.

On work pages, something like this:

  • Trope: Example from series
    • Another example from series

... is incorrect, right? It should be:

  • Trope:
    • Example
    • Example

On trope pages, this is incorrect:

  • This series has [trope].
    • Another instance of [trope] in same series.

It should be:

  • Series
    • Instance 1 of trope
    • Instance 2 of trope

And on moments pages, it shouldn't be this:

  • In "[title of episode]", this is heartwarming.
    • This moment from the same episode is also heartwarming.

Or this:

  • Ho Yay moment
    • Expanding on Ho Yay Moment

But this:

  • "[title of episode]":
    • Heartwarming moment 1
    • Heartwarming moment 2

And this:

  • Ho Yay moment + expanding on moment (combined into one bullet point)

With the usage of third bullets being very rare.

Pretty sure this is the only time where I used one as of late, and I think I got it right:

That pretty much exactly what Example Indentation in Trope Lists is saying.

Quick tips:

  • 1 example, the trope/work name and the example stay in the same single bullet.
  • >1 examples, trope/work/episode name placed separately, all examples are put on separate double-bullets.
    • It's currently arguable if the first bullet allows a shared comment, but it's best to not have one.
  • Examples can't act as comments to other examples. If they describe the same scene, they should be merged.
  • A trope cannot be a subbullet to another trope.
  • Grouping works by franchise / episodes by work is allowed, but I prefer to avoid it.

so, in regards to quality upgrades of image, is it possible to directly add the better image without approval from the accompanying forum or not…bc I added an image after showcasing it in the better quality image forum and found out that the person approved it to be replaced… or idk.

[up]Yes, quality upgrades are a free action. How to Pick a Good Image covers this, particularly this bullet point:

  • Some images simply have bad image quality (compression artifacts, pixelation, and so on). This detracts from what the image is showing, and simple quality upgrades are something you don't even need to ask to replace. For example: Giant Enemy Crab had this image, but we replaced it with this higher-quality version of the same thing. This is a free action: You don't need discussion or approval to swap in a higher-quality version of the previous image, you can just do it yourself and be on your way.

IMO Trope Talk has become a dumping ground for ppl to ask all sorts of random questions about issues they personally have with tropes, even if others disagree that they are issues, and even if they fit better on other areas of the site such as Ask The Tropers, Trope Finder, and Wiki Talk.

Then again, maybe that's just me. What do you guys think?

[down]

Anyway, is this a policy concern or anything?

Yeah, I feel that the thread should be regulated a bit more cuz it's pretty much become a soapbox at this point. Maybe introduce new guidelines on what and what not to ask or something.

People actually get directed away from ATT if they're asking random questions about tropes. I've seen people post misplaced Trope Finder queries, but those also get redirected. Never saw anything that would fit better under Wiki Talk, the two have pretty distinct purposes.

Anyway, is this a policy concern or anything?
