I like Sacred 108 or Buddhist 108 because it gets a bit more at what it actually means. Symbolic 108 opens the door for people re-adding shoehorned coincidences with made up bs about what it symbolizes.

I previously suggested 108 Symbolism, but I think Sacred 108 and Mystical 108 are good; less fond of Buddhist 108 since 108 is symbolic in other Eastern religions as well.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

Are we redefining the trope a bit to make it clear it's not for random appearances of 108? Because the paragraph about why it shows up in Western media encourages that usage IMO.

"Clarify the description" and "redefine the trope" are not the same thing. I haven't seen anyone in this thread argue that the definition was intended to be about anything other than the reference to Buddhism. If you'd like to propose a rewrite of the description, you're welcome to do so.

I guess, but I've been wick cleaning and so much is just non-Eastern religion use, eg. Penelope's 108 suitors in The Odyssey. And given that paragraph, functionally the trope is already being used as "gratuitous 108".

Also, opinions on this one from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann? I'm familiar with the show and there is Eastern religion imagery with said ships so the first one could pass, but the numbers are so...stretchy?

Given the obviously Buddhism inspired ships, this was wholly intentional. If you really want to get into the symbolism here, what's 13 minutes in seconds? That's right, 780 seconds, plus the 21 seconds, and you get 801, which is 108 backwards.
  • The series has 27 episodes. 27 times four is 108.

I think the paragraph you're trying to reference is this one (bad link) from ~Tropers/{{10-13-2}} on Oct 31st 2015 at 6:33:35 PM. That's not part of the original description and was added based on the misuse. It should probably be cut because its trying to justify the misuse.

A note to anyone who runs into a Suikoden sinkhole because there are a lot: the series as a whole is an example through transitivity as it's based on a classic Chinese novel, but I've been cutting many useless wicks (eg. a Loads And Loads Of Characters entry about 108 recruitable characters.)
