Ambiguous Name: Gender Flip

Sounds very similar to Gender Bender, with neither title indicating a distinction. Gender Flip is most similar to things like Race Lift and Adaptational Sexuality, and should receive a name in line with one of these like Adaptational Gender Flip

My so far halfhearted effort to clean the main page seems pertinent. I was unsure what actually counts and what doesn’t because the examples are a mess.

I'm a bit iffy on jumping into a "change the name" discussion with no actual indication of misuse. The names do sound the same, but are people actually confusing them? ^note I'm sure they very well are, but we still need evidence to go on...

Same here. I believe the main page needs a cleanup, but there’s no evidence presented that a rename is necessary for a trope with over 4000 wicks.

Agreed. The trope has 4288 wicks; it'd be best to have evidence that this trope is being misused before having to go through all that hassle.

i can get working on a wick check when i get home in am hour or two.

The thread shouldn't have been opened until there was already a wick check. There is currently no actual proof that there is anything wrong.

And now someone besides the OP is volunteering to do the work. Which is nice of them, but the burden of proof is on the OP.

Based on a google search, common uses of Gender Flip and Gender Bender largely conform to the current TV tropes definitions ^note Gender Bender can also refer to people who crossdress or present ambiguously, which I would consider closer in spirit to Gender Bender the trope than Gender Flip. Personally I've never heard it used that way. I don't think it's all that confusing.

Also, we are the top result for Gender Flip, and Gender Flip has 16,254 inbounds. I think renaming could harm TV Tropes' visibility to the larger web.

Yeahh, Pidget_Spinner, this is the second time you've made a thread about two apparently similar tropes that lacked a wick check. The first time was the Major Injury Underreaction thread, and our wick checks after the fact proved that two of the three tropes mentioned weren't being misused.

Please start doing the leg work if you're going to do threads like this. We can't go based on the titles being kinda similar or the laconics being similar or something- we need hard evidence here, and you aren't providing any.

And I'm still of the opinion that since the OP made no effort to provide one, the thread should be locked.

If someone wants to do a wick check and make a new thread, good for them. But this is little more than the old "I don't like this name, change my mind" threads that were common before the auto-lock system was in place.
