Wick Check Project

I doubt there even are meaningful examples since the "trope" proposes a dozen separate concepts. Just make notes in a sanbox near each example to see what it's describing and check for patterns for later, the "tries to use a payphone but they no longer in service" cound be one of them.

Feel free to at least make a sandbox and link it for us, or tag it on the main sandbox under "works needing wick checks". Normally though you can't just use this thread to ask other people to make a wick check- the project is for getting feedback on checks and doing them collaboratively, but we expect people to at least get the ball rolling.

So, me and other tropers finished Sandbox.Horned Hairdo Wick Check a while ago and I was wondering if the wick ratio was bad enough to justify making a TRS thread. Horned Hairdo entries with full context are usually correct but I think the trope's name contributes to its bad ZCE problem and half context examples that only highlight the hairstyle.

Seems like it.

I've started one. I can evaluate film (and maybe TV) wicks. I may need help with the rest.

The ZCEs are more than twice the correct examples, so yeah I'd say it's TRS worthy (I think at some point I suggested changing it to Evil Horned Hairdo just to make it more specific).

(As a sidenote, the Steven Universe example in the ZCE folder should be moved to the misuse folder - I'm familiar with the series and the character it's referring to isn't evil, and in fact tried to pull a I Am Spartacus for the heroes despite not even knowing them)

I'm just gonna do Diary Wick Check because that "trope" needs to go sooner rather than later.

12 wicks in and while I am noticing ZCEs, I also notice that some entries refer to a diary-esque writing style. Do we have a trope for that?

Hello, is this the place to ask for help with wick checks? I'm not sure entirely how to use RNG for it, especially since the links on a Related page aren't numbered. The trope I'd like to wick check is You Can Panic Now, which seems to see a lot of misuse due to its misleading title.

You can make the lines numbered in Notepad++ or any other editor that has that kind of visibility setting. Alternatively, you can take all links and shuffle the lines (google has plenty of tools) and pick top 50 or how many needed there.

Yeah, I'd advise against getting numbers and then finding the wicks that match. It's a lot more time consuming.

Closest I can find is Epistolary Novel which also links to Diary in the "see also" section, so probably not yet. We could spin that off of Diary.

Epistolary Novel is definitely much more narrow than a "Diary style" captures; I can think of several works off the top of my head that involve literal secret diaries, in a more casual and unreliable storytelling style. I'd definitely be willing to see it get split off.

Right, so considering Asexual was disambiged a while back and Romantic Asexual is currently in TRS with a lean towards cutting since it's PSOC, I decided to take a crack at doing Villainous Aromantic Asexual since it's just "a villain, but they ain't into romance or sex". Wick check is here, it's already looking bad.

Edit: I also made a wick check for Split Screen because I noticed the trope has a ZCE tendency - despite this trope being very easy to describe, all the examples just say "this".

I don't think it's chairsy if the only character who is aro-ace is a villain — that's a stereotype. Plus, many of the examples listed under "just happens to be asexual and/or aromantic" go into detail about how they only see sex as a tool for manipulation or as a distraction from their evil plans, which definitely feels like a link between the identity and villainy, not just "character is X and Y."

It might be more of a trope in aggregate, actually. But I'll wait to see the check results.

I'm thinking about doing a Wick Check for The Bus Came Back. When checking wicks, do I just ignore wicks to non-trope or work pages like Shocking Moments and YMMV pages?

Nah, potholes like that should be accounted for too. I'm sometimes guilty of skipping weird pages like Headscratchers/ or Fridge/ because it's a little too subjective there, but things like moments and YMMV are fair game.
