English Localization Cleanup

Go To

The Administrivia policy for works created in other languages is Troping Works Created in Other Languages. At the moment, this is focused on works with official translations.

More broadly, TV Tropes has a rule that the latest English translation will normally take priority over the original (some exceptions are listed on the Administrivia page), but many pages and examples still use older titles and character names. This cleanup is to help relieve that.

For policy discussions, see the wiki talk Translation Policy thread.

For pages needing work, see here: Sandbox.English Localization Cleanup

If the official localizations are using Gakuen Alice then it should be moved back.

Moved it back to Gakuen Alice and redirected Characters.Alice Academy to Characters.Gakuen Alice because it had 1.8k inbounds. Cutlisted the rest of the subpages of AA.

[up]Looks good[tup]

Couple of questions:

1 - Saikano goes under that name in the US but in the UK is was released as She, the Ultimate Weapon. Should that be a redirect and if so as the manga was never released under that name just the anime (as far as I can tell) should the redirect be under the anime or manga redirect.

2 - Technically, I believe the official English localisation for Kono Suba is KonoSuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World! should it be changed?

I think Konosuba (KonoSuba?) can be left as-is for brevity.

It could be left a "Konosuba" I think. The English part only serves a subtitle. Konosuba is still the main title.

[up]Agreed, but maybe change the custom title to KonoSuba.

Based on this ATT, is there any rule against using fan-translated English titles for works that aren't officially released in English?

Cool on KonoSuba. Anyone have any ideas about my Saikano question?

[up] As per the paged linked to in the first answer on that question:

  • What if it's a foreign work with a non-English title?
TV Tropes is an English-language wiki, so we prefer to use the English titles where applicable. So if the work has an official localized title, use the English title for the page and add the non-English title as a redirect. However, if the work doesn't have an officially-translated English title, you can use the non-English title for the main page and make the English translation into a redirect instead.

Thinking about it, as this is the second time I have posted this in this thread, should the rule be added to the pinned part at the top as well?

[up]"You can" doesn't mean "you must", or that works using a fan-translated title must be moved to their original language title.

Actually, both Amazon and Crunchyroll listings for the novels spell it "Konosuba" without CamelCase.

Yes She, the Ultimate Weapon should be a redirect as it is an official English title just like Saikano is.

[up] Really? I should have waited before submitting KonoSuba as a custom title request then

Crunchyroll's listing has it as KONOSUBA (in all caps), while Wikipedia has it as KonoSuba. (I omitted the subtitle in both cases because I'm on mobile and don't want to retype it.)

[up][up]Cool thanks.

Wikipedia use KonoSuba and they usually go with the official title/spelling.[nja]

[up][up][up]True, however I read that as only official titles counted for the work pages themselves (i.e. not redirects) English or not, but that could just be me.

[up][up] Technically, their policy is to use names that are commonly recognized by English speakers over official or formal ones.

The whole KonoSuba/Konosuba thing is one I can only hope will go better than trying to determine whether to capitalize "into" in Star Trek Into Darkness.

With regards to non-localized works, we should just use what everyone else is using. There's no real need to get picky about any specific rules here. (Just avoid a "first come, first served" mentality and we'll be fine.)

I just wanted to have this registered here just for official record. About three years ago, there was a ATT thread about moving Kiki Kai Kai to Pocky & Rocky, the localized name for the series in America.

An attempt to move stuff had started but was immediately reverted and progress stalled on the matter. The reason? The original version of Pocky & Rocky, the Japanese-only Kiki Kai Kai never was localized for America as it was an arcade exclusive in Japan. The two console sequels and the Game Boy Advance title were the only games that released in America as Pocky & Rocky, Pocky & Rocky 2, and Pocky & Rocky with Becky respectively.

Well Kiki Kai Kai finally will be released in America...under its original Japanese name. I figured to have this news logged here if discussion is needed about handling the Kiki Kai Kai page. The game should release tomorrow at 11 AM Central time in the US during Nintendo of America's weekly eShop updates.

[up] We should wait to see how the release is handled.

Releasing the Japanese arcade game unaltered would not be a translation, thus Pocky & Rocky would remain the most recent English translation.

[up]I have always read the rule as using the most recent Localisation not translation and to only use the English translation as the main title if it is the title of the most recent localisation, which is why Rurouni Kenshin uses the that name rather than the older localised name of Samurai X.

Anyway. I am slowly cleaning wicks for Buso(u) Renkin and three of them are on troper Sandboxes. Is it okay for me to change them myself or should I PM the tropes to ask them to do so?

[up] An unaltered Japanese arcade game would be neither a translation or a localization. Now that it's out, we can check and see what's going on.

Well now things get a little weird.

Apparently there was a bootleg of Kiki Kai Kai in the US that was called Knight Boy. Looking on YouTube, Knight Boy appears to don't do really anything different other than having a different title screen (I haven't checked to see if there's an Attract Mode for both versions).

Well with the US release of Kiki Kai Kai, the bootleg Knight Boy was included now making that version an official release. I hope this info is of help in order to figure out what to do going ahead here.

EDIT - According to a commentator at GoNintendo and this video from the PS4 version, apparently the official bootleg news was incorrect. It seems like HAMSTER directly translated the game into English and not tied it to the localization that later games used for Pocky & Rocky.

I apologize for the error, but it seems like the direct translations still throw a wrench in this wiki's page on the game.

Okay, actually did the thing with moving Subarashiki Hibi -> Wonderful Everyday: Down the Rabbit-Hole.

Submitted its subpages to the cut list and will take a look at its wicks later.

This is my first time moving an already maintained page for localization so hopefully this goes well.
