So Bad It's Horrible Cleanup

Go To

So Bad, It's Horrible is one of the more flame-bait-y parts of the site, so a cleanup thread is needed to ensure that works aren't added simply because someone doesn't like them.

If you want to list a work under this, keep the following in mind:

  • The work must have very few fans or defenders (both genuine and ironic). It should fail to appeal to any type of audience.
  • Being offensive in its subject matter isn't enough.
  • It isn't horrible just because a certain critic disliked it, though their reviews can be used as sources and citations.
  • The work should have notably poor reviews (e.g., less than 3/10 on IMDb, or single digit scores on Rotten Tomatoes)
  • Please be polite while writing and as much as possible, avoid falling into Complaining About Shows You Don't Like. Instead, focus on explaining why the work is horrible.

Could Universal Studios Theme Park Adventure be a contender? Wikipedia doesn't list any rankings higher than 39% on Metacritic, and is pretty unanimously considered awful thanks to its lackluster presentation that actively makes the game's overworld more difficult to play, the low quality of the minigames, and the fact that picking up trash of all things is a major gameplay mechanic.

Funnily enough, my class was just roasting that very game the other day. I haven't played the game myself, but nobody whom I've ever heard talking about the game online or IRL has had anything nice to say about the game.

Alright, here's Take #2 of the condensed Popeye draft:

  • The original 1982 Popeye arcade game is a classic, notably being overseen by none other than Shigeru Miyamoto himself. The 2021 remake of the game for the Nintendo Switch by Sabec, conversely, makes the original game look like a joke. Gameplay is much like the original arcade game, only on a 3D plane, but the similarities, and the fun, stop there. There is no penalty for missing any of the items Olive Oyl throws for Popeye to catch, leaving much of the challenge to come from avoiding an increasingly faster Bluto/Brutus, vulture, and obstacles thrown by a character resembling the Sea Hag, all while you only have three lives with no way to earn more. The game features a very bland and barebones presentation, poor optimization, bizarre glitches, and graphics that are very subpar by 2021 standards, with the level maps themselves feeling lazily thrown together and having little visual cohesion due to the game being almost entirely made up of stock Unity assets. The game received a shipload of reviews from people gobsmacked at just how joyless and phoned-in the game felt for a game based on a fun and adventurous franchise like Popeye, such as Jim Sterling (who named it their worst game of the year), the Wiiviewr (who also called it the worst Switch game of the year), JohnRiggs (who actually got threatened with litigation from the developers for his negative review), AntDude, Angry Joe, and finally Rerez.

Jojo Siwa's new song Karma might be worth keeping an eye on, it's not old enough to qualify, but it has received a large amount of negative reception from critics and fans, and was also accused of stealing from Miley Cyrus.

[up] Is it actually alleged to be stolen or was it an unused Miley song that went to her? The latter happens all the time.

[up] It's the latter, but the belief that it's stolen helped contribute to the song's hatred

I'm not familiar with it, but is the song itself also of poor quality, or was it just negatively-received?

According to the main page of So Bad, It's Horrible, the actual quality of the work itself is part of the consideration for something being SBIH:

  • The work as a whole is truly terrible by the standard of the medium involved, with a low quality in all aspects of work creation: storytelling, drawing, writing, and so on.

I think that Bocchi was saying that it's likely that there could be some knee-jerk attempts to add it to the page, as opposed to asking whether or not the song could be added to the page after it's been long enough — but I still think it's worth asking this, considering the main reason for the song's negative reception was apparently due to accusations of plagiarism.

[up] I agree that Misblamed seems like a better fit, though I'm also wondering if the song could potentially qualify for Overshadowed by Controversy as well.

while the song HAS been negatively received- most of that negative reaction has been more mocking, and I’ve seen many people ironically quote or sing it. the production is just generic poppy song, so I’d say it’s more So Bad, It's Good than So Bad Its Horrible.

Does this game seem to fit? Smash 'N' Survive

A vehicle combat game that is so obscure and forgotten, but the few who manage to make it work called it the worst combat vehicle game. A stitched together asset and low texture flip, with game feel described as similar to Big Rigs, minimum assets and game modes, only six levels of repeated assets, and has a lot of car models that play the same, and barely functioning combat system. Kicker for me is this game was $29.99 at release! Even Big Rigs was a budget game.

I think Grimes’ 2024 Coachella performance is worth keeping an eye on since reception seems to be atrocious across the board.

I'm gonna ask again whether or not we want to keep or pull the Love Live and Culling 2 entries on Advertising. It's currently three votes for keep, three votes for pull.

[tup]for keep, because sabotaging your product in the same breath as trying to promote it qualifies as really, really bad marketing.

Agreed that Grimes' Coahchella performance will probably end up qualifying. I won't be surprised if it completely torpedoes her career, even.

Eh, I lean on a pull. Terrible moves to be sure, but these aren't works. They barely even count as advertisements, and they aren't so dumb that they could be ranked alongside the likes of "Where's Herb" and the Pepsi campaign that started a riot. Corporations doing something dumb doesn't seem to be enough to qualify as horrible, or else so many other things would be on here.

I'm the one who adde the Culling 2 example, but I'm still voting for pull, since the hate is for the token system (Culling) / end-of-service date (Love Live), not the announcements.

Yeah they aren't really full advertisements just announcements, and the hatred comes from the content themselves and not the ad itself. Its like calling a battle pass announcement horrible because many people hate battle passes, the issue wouldn't be the announcement or "ad" it would be from the studio for making the battle pass

Asking again since I think I mostly got missed last time [1]. Does anyone have any thoughts on the Universal Studios game? I have done some work on a write-up, but I haven't figured out if it'll be eligible yet.

I think the Universal Studio game might count. It's got low ratings and lack of quality required. The Angry Video Game Nerd also reviewed it and seemed disappointed in it (though I know that doesn't necessarily mean it's Horrible).

I have a draft for Universal Studios. I feel confused because I simultaneously feel like I'm not saying enough about the game here, but I also worry I'm being too wordy.

  • On paper, Universal Studios Theme Park Adventure for the Gamecube seems like a winning concept, presenting a series of mini-games themed around some of the most beloved films of all time, tied together under the guise of rides in a simulation of the real-life Universal Studios. Sadly, the game is more likely to deter players from wanting to visit the real Universal. Navigating the park is a chore, since instead of a fully three-dimensional world, the park is represented through a series of still images with a fixed camera which doesn't follow your character or show where the boundaries for each screen are. It's not uncommon to move to another screen and not even be able to see your kid because of how far in the distance they are. Not helping matters is the game's bizarre decision to replicate some of the less desirable aspects of the theme park experience. You can't enter an attraction if the line is too long, which happens at random and only becomes more frequent the further you get into the game. One of the most consistent ways to get the points necessary to bypass the lines is to pick up and throw away trash polluting the park, which is hardly something anyone would want to do to have fun at a theme park. Things don't improve when you do finally make it to the rides, as the games within feature very little content, and tend to either drag on long after they've worn out their welcome, or suffer from poor controls that make them difficult to play properly. Gamespot gave the game a 3.5 in their review, finding the game too frustrating for kids, and too tedious for anyone else, while The Angry Video Game Nerd features the game here, where he unfavorably compares the E.T. Adventure minigame to its Atari 2600 counterpart.
