Lisa Ekdahl's has an interesting "cafe environment" sound, but her actual singing is very inconsistent (she keeps alternating between fast and slow, sometimes in mid-verse), so i will go with Doris Day's version.

Kirby's vocal performance is quite impressive, but The Voice's format makes me long for more. Both versions don't differ much in terms of instrumentation, but Stevie Nicks wins by a hair's breadth.

"Видели ночь" (We Saw The Night)

The original, by Kino

Zdob si Zdub's cover version

Translated lyrics:

We left our house
When lights in all windows
Went out one by one,
Went out one by one.
We saw the last tram leaving slowly,
It has gone away!
Cabs're passing by,
We got no cash to pay,
And we don't need to rush,
We are strolling alone,
And our tape recorder has
Finished to play, wind
The tape!

We saw the night,
We walked all night long till the dawn.
We saw the night,
We walked all night long till the dawn.

Hey, enter the phone booth and call them
To tell them to lock (up) the door
In your flat tonight,
Now take off your sneakers -
We'll walk barefoot on the stone.
[We]'ve got cigarettes and some matches
And a bottle of wine, and it will
Help us to abide,
Will help us to fancy
All sleep here,
And we are alone.

We saw the night,
We walked all night long till the dawn.
We saw the night,
We walked all night long till the dawn.

I will absolutely go with the original for keeping that awesome bassline front and center, also I prefer their vocal style by far. Although as an avid Eurovision fan I do understand Zdob si Zdub's appeal.

One of Tom Waits' most "mainstream" songs, and, consequently, the most covered one. I'm a huge Tom Waits fan, but I hate to admit that his gritty vocal style isn't really suited for this kind of songs. Everything but the Girl's cover goes way too far in another, sappy direction. I prefer Rod Stewart's rendition since it finds the balance between the two.

Neither version sounds great, but Becky Hill didn't even sound like she was trying. Alphaville at least sounds like they're trying to put an effort into singing, so I'll pick Alphaville.

Growing up in the 90's - 00's, Shaggy's version's the one I'm more familiar with, and I have to say I've missed out a lot of good stuff. Can't really decide between Evie Sands' and Billie Davis' versions, though the latter sounds a bit even more appropriately angelic by a fraction.

I'll go with Larson's for the upbeat music tune, and I like the way Larson delivers the last words at the end of each verse.

I feel there is more to the BNL cover, what with the more reserved tone and that gradual climb towards the end. Call me biased for being exposed to the cover long before the New Wave original, but it's a damn good one.

Close. I thought the outro on the original went on for way too long, however, to the point of some annoyance, so I'll go with the cover.

(Puts on Flame-Retardant suit)

I do not like the original version of "Blinded By The Light" by Bruce Springsteen. Apart from a couple songs (such as "Dancing With The Dark"), I've never really been much into Bruce Springsteen's music and honestly found him overrated (also, he sounds drunk in several of his songs, including this one). I know a lot of people prefer his original, and that for many, saying Mannfred Mann's version is better is often seen as sacrilegious in the eyes of many Springsteen fans, but Mann's version just has a more rocking, catchy feel to it.

My only complaint with Mann's cover is (as many pointed), that damned mondegreen "Wrapped up like deuce/douche." But, I will point out that Springsteen's original has it's own mondegreen that most people don't point out: "Cut loose like a deuce/goose", which I'll admit, sounds funnier.

Mariah Carey's obviously the vocal powerhouse here, though I find Nilsson's cover interesting as well. The original is a bit too stripped-down for my tastes. Mariah wins.

Okay, as someone who grew up with several different versions of the song: I think that the Sinatra/Basie version will always be the definitive one for me. Not only it's the best-known in the media and features two mid-century jazz legends, but I had to choreograph a dance routine to it once and have had every beat committed to memory since.

I still love the other two to bits. The Kaye Ballard original is criminally under-appreciated and has a calming, lullaby-esque vibe to it. The Evangelion version is quite iconic in its own right and Littley gave a truly valiant performance despite being roped into the recording in an ad-hoc manner. But the Sinatra/Basie version just exudes an unbeatable sophistication and charisma, and basically represents the best of its era.

Man, I was really hoping to like ELO's cover as that group usually does great music. I like that it opened with Beethoven's 5th, but once the vocals started, I thought, "Oh, that sounds like crap."

As for Chuck Berry or The Beatles, I don't have any real preference between the two, so I'll just pick Chuck Berry's simply for being first.

Brown's original and it's not even close. Paul's voice is kinda terrible and the acoustic arrangement does not nearly pack the same punch. He was already fighting an uphill battle and just couldn't pull it off.

Interesting, I always thought the Animals version was the original. I'm aware of a couple other covers of that song as well.

Never heard the Simone version before. It's rather downbeat and laidback compared to other versions I've heard. Simone's version is a heartfelt ballad and the Animals' version is like a catchy pub song. I'm gonna go with Nina.

I really felt the Charles Bradley version: the man's got the perfect voice for this type of song, and I think that the main melody sounds better on guitar. The original feels a bit too empty, and I've never been fan of Ozzy's vocals. Kelly Clarkson did well, I suppose, but R'n'B is absolutely not my thing.

An issue I tend to have with Ringo Starr is his works (original or otherwise) all have essentially the same sound and tone to them. So his cover doesn't really stand out to me from the other solo work he's done. So I pick the original by The Posies.
