1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

This is probably a beaten down issue that's been brought up already, but sometimes pages I try to edit end up locking themselves for no apparent reason.

@MrMediaGuy2: maybe not, but if you've been looking at the past couple 'o pages, there is a list of bug reports compiled by one of the mods. A couple of mine might be in there!

@Dirtyblue929: IKR? Anyway, I might take a break from typing up a storm and nearly cramping my hand. See ya tomorrow, maybe. If this site isn't dead by tomorrow, but that ain't gonna happen.

...right?

@zealot: Compared to the last version of the site, the changes are fairly minor as far as the layout goes. Well, except for the forums. The forums got hit pretty bad. For the site itself though, it's still not as drastic as the changes from layout 1 to layout 2, or layout 2 to layout 3. The differences amount to changing the color of the headers and shuffling some things around for unclear reasons.

I know people have brought these up before, but I want to emphasize the problems with line spacing, indentation, quote indentation, and the way the folders look. The changes make them look weird, especially for anything past the first indent. Quote indents in particular all display the same no matter what their actual indentation is, which in many cases makes quoted lines weirdly off to the left instead of properly indented under their example.

It doesn't sound like much, but that's why I'm worried. I have a feeling it's all going to be dismissed as "not a real problem" and ignored completely.

Firefox, Windows, latest of both.

[up][up][up]Honestly, the only reason I didn't bring that up is because I figured you had it handled. I wonder if graphical issues should be kept on a separate list from the wiki-breaking bugs; as much as they annoy us, they are lower priority than literally not being able to edit the wiki.

Since I feel like I've been too negative in this thread, I should mention I do like the new forum search function. Haven't had a chance to play around with it yet, though.

Apart from the fact that you can't see your avatar on the Profile page, which has been mentioned already, when you go into the Avatar Gallery there's no back button to return to the Profile page.

Why was this changed everything was alright before this change now I cannot even get into my usual account. Why was something fixed when IT WAS NOT BROKEN! seriously who though this change was a good idea in all my years visiting this site this has to be the worst decision by far yet. Switch back to the old layout this is horrible and confusing mess that barely works...

@Midna Your post prompted me to visit the forums which I have in the past done only very infrequently and... yikes. I imagine people who use the forums frequently are even less happy than basic trope editors like myself. The header colors don't actually bother me any, just the overall... shrinking of everything. Browsing pages now feels very much like reading a website from the backend, it's like this bizarre marriage of modern day Facebook and circa early 2000s Geocities backend aesthetics.

I stop paying attention for one day, and there’s already 35 pages of people discussing an update I don’t even know the purpose of, speaking of which, can anybody tell me what that purpose was?

Also, I think theres an issue with the Save Draft in posting, not sure if that’s just me or if other people get it.

this is the first time in a long while since I’ve even been on a thread here, so not sure if I’m remembering everything about that correctly, but I think that if it’s possible, there should be an option to switch back to the old view of threads instead of this one.

[up][up]Yeah, it doesn't help that I have bad eyesight. I'm not 20:200 blind, but I pretty much have to squint to read anything that's under 11-point font. Which is, in this layout, a depressing number of things.

[up]As far as I know it's to "streamline the database and reduce running costs."

I'm still not happy with how the Thread Watchlist organizes the threads. It should go like this:

Threads with non-viewed posts in chronological order of the last post.

Threads with viewed posts in chronological order of the last post.

Having the whole list just be in chronological order, with the new posts appearing as green checkmarks, is annoying and could cause me to miss some threads further down the Watchlist on a busy day. Also, I don't like how spread out the threads are. In general, this update has spaced out a lot of text that used to be a lot more compressed and easy to read.

I'm on Firefox, Windows 7, 1920x1080 for my usual usage.

just bugs me Pages that have "One", "Two", "Three" character lists types at the top tends to start showing the default font size before going up at least two font sizes when the page finishes loading.

just bugs me The "labelnote" seems to be acting weird across different pages when it comes to the character pictures, as seen here with Kongou (far left) from Kantai Collection Four, Lexington (second left) from Kantai Collection Six, Myoukou (second right) from Kantai Collection Three, and Dante (far right) from Devil May Cry - Heroes.

just bugs me The "labelnote" had been acting weird in that it wouldn't function properly, showing the picture even though it's basically copy-paste from other captioned pictures.

just bugs me Myoukou's labelnote there has that extra red line to show the picture size difference when it comes to that block surrounding the primary picture when "quoteright" is used. It wasn't there before, and it feels redundant.

just bugs me Hitting "Back" on a browser shouldn't temporarily lock a user out from editing the page. The "Cancel/Back" button is tiny and I didn't notice it until I had to also look for the "Upload Image" button, which is also rather small.

Oh yeah, another small thing that I don't like. I don't like how Threads only go two pages forward and backwards before the useless "go one page forward or backward" options and "go to the first or last page" options.

Seriously, why do websites still have the button of going one page forward or back when the numbered pages are already clearly shown on either side of the page you're on? It's always a really stupid and pointless design decision. Do one or the other, not both. And don't restrict to only two pages forward and back if you're going to use the numbered pages method, it almost completely invalidates the entire point of it.

Well, here's how I see it:

The site looks how it looks. Certainly, the look and feel of the site could be optimized, but I think the actual functionality of the site — i.e. the ability to stay logged in and edit tropes — should take precedent over complaints of how ugly it looks. I caution my fellow Tropers not to get too worked up about the aesthetics of the site, lest you ignore the more pressing issues here. I'm going to further presume (not being versed in coding a website) that this sort of thing is fiendishly difficult, and give the staff the benefit of the doubt.

This kind of response always happens when the look and feel of a site changes. And people tend to try to one-up each other and use more emphatic and hyperbolic language to describe the situation — "horrible", "travesty", "literally hurts my eyes" (no, it's not that bad), "Ruined Forever". People got over being genuinely angry for long enough to boast about winning crowners and adding the update as an example on Obvious Beta. It makes it difficult to parse threads like this for real issues to sort out. But this being said:

Why the change?

I mean, I don't get why you would risk borking the site just to move a few things around. You would do it to provide some real improvements to the site. I'm going to assume that these improvements are back-end things that won't be visible to us ordinary Tropers. But still, could you please tell us what that is? I don't care if it's all programming jargon that will fly over my head. I just want to know that there was a purpose to this update, a reason to get everyone all up in arms. Does it make it faster? More stable? More secure (I did notice it's encrypted/https, which wasn't the case before)? Are things being set up for the long-awaited Two Point Oh migration? Please tell us what you did right — then we (or at least I) will be more inclined to forgive you for the things you didn't do so right wink

Also, a few things I spotted:

  • Second and third-level bullets don't have indented paragraphs like first-level bullets, so it's harder to read them.
  • No spoilers on/off toggle on the sidebar — would like that back, please.
  • Folders on/off toggle doesn't seem to be sticking, so they're all closed by default despite my profile indicating otherwise.
