1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

Main issue I can find that I don't see in the compiled lists is that the overhaul's done very nasty things to manual line breaks. If they were already there and the page hasn't been touched since the overhaul, they work fine, but edit anything on the page post-overhaul and they all promptly stop working entirely.

Also, for some reason, there's no longer an Edit button in the top left corner on a history page.

Septimus Heap, is that an intentional blank post?

[up] Line breaks like the ----? They've worked fine on pages after I've edited them.

[down] You could also bring that up in the too-long thread

[down][down][down] oh, yes

Also, nightvision makes it clear that pinned posts on threads have a quirky piece of tape looking like it's holding them up. This is invisible unless you're looking for it when the site is white

Editing wiki pages above a certain size appears to give me an HTTP 500 error, or it just puts me back on the edit page, even though they're not also giving a "too big and should split warning".

Is there option to extend the time period of the new pages filter in Recent Changes?

It's a real pain to check the new pages when the list resets at night, makes it real hard to find spam and vandalism since there is no overlap a few minutes late mean that the whole list is gone

[up][up][up] No, I meant like putting two backslashes at the end of a sentence so the next one is on a new line with the same indentation.

When you search in Night Mode, the search results appear in a white box which can be quite blinding in the dark.

Also, in a note, the word "note" (for example on Tetris at the very beginning) looks basically like normal text making it hard to find it in the first place.

I logged out and every spoiler is visible with no apparent way to hide them for non-Tropers (on my computer, at least). Clicking them like you used to be able to do also does nothing. It kind of defeats the purpose of Spoiler Tags when you can't hide the Spoilers.

Uh every time I try to make a new post, a previous saved draft I already used keeps appearing so I have to manually delete it each time.

Plus I seem unable to save any new drafts now.

Wow. Yeah. I never saw that. I refuse to believe a dev coded this and even test-looked at it. There's no way they'd not have seen it's not visible.

The new Thread Watchlist format sucks. I liked the satisfaction of 'cleaning out' the threads with waiting posts, and having to scroll through all of them just to find which ones have a green checkmark is tedious. I can see the appeal of merging Thread Watchlist and Threads Watched, but it should put the threads with unseen posts at the top of the list, and maybe color the threads without unseen posts differently.

Also, seconding that there is too much empty space between posts and on either side of the page.

Some more issues to point out:

  • The names on folders are not centered.

  • Clicking the profile leads straight to the main site page.

  • Notice how this image has a white outline around it:
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/littleinfernotinder.jpg

  • NOTE:*** The outline may not appear, but It’s definitely viewable right here.

This is affecting all other images on this site, so is there a way to remove that outline?

Lymantria perhaps some brightness/contrast makes it more visible?

The Tropper — I do not see a white outline around that image, both in normal and nightvision. Many of the images on the site do have boxes now, and I think it'd look cleaner if the images were just allowed to be better sized.

Also, the preview pages function isn't working for me (saving edits is fine, previewing forum posts is fine). Nor is superscripting mark-up (unless I've got it wrong). That would seem to connect to the issue with notes.

Ghilz We now have three long pages of bugs. If this was tested in any way before rolling it out then someone clearly clocked off early for lunch. I'm not going to mince words: i feel insulted. I didn't feel insulted five-six pages back, but the more bugs that get reported, the more I feel as if laziness or apathy was a factor.

Whether the piece of tape pinning the first post is visible or not depends on your monitor settings (brightness, in particular). Just saying. It's not an issue with the coding. My monitor shows it clearly in either setting.

Wide Load should absolutely do more than just add a half inch of space on either side, especially when there's another half inch of space left unused.

I have a few issues myself. I didn't care much for the new appearance, but I was willing to deal with it. However, the format won't let me make new updates, and if I accidentally bounce away from a page I'm editing, I get locked out. I agree with the majority, let's go back to the previous format. Don't know why they changed it anyway. There was nothing wrong with the old one.

It would seriously be nice if I didn't have to go back up to the top of the page to go back to a forum from a thread. It would also seriously be nice if the Thread Watchlist didn't list every thread I'm watching regardless of new posts or not (the Watched Threads list is still there, isn't it?).

Beyond that, I...actually don't mind this new layout too much? I mean, I wish avatars were at their old size and that the color scheme was more vibrant than it currently is (though I guess the last layout wasn't too colorful either), but that's about everything I couldn't get used to.

The folders blend in too much with the pages they're on, especially when they're open. I don't want line breaks that blend in, I want buttons that stand out!

Look, I get wanting to make things look cleaner, but there's a world of difference between clean and stark, and this is clearly stark.

When editing To-Do Lists putting an apostrophe causes a "\" to appear in the edit preview between it and the letter before it.

(It doesn't show up when you actually edit though so it's merely weird instead of debilitating.)
