Dark Sun, what choices have I...?
#51: Jun 11th 2017 at 12:20:51 AM

We don't see Terezi using Seer powers especially frequently, but what we do see suggests that they primarily deal with the immediate effects of singular actions, eg "if I stab this guy I'll get shot and die, whilst if I stab that guy I won't get shot and will live". This is most clearly demonstrated when she visualizes what will happen if Vriska flies off to fight a certain uber-powerful enemy: if she lets Vriska go, said enemy will find out where everyone else is hiding and kill them, whilst if she kills Vriska then and there, everyone else remains safe.

Her powers also aren't shown to deal in information not available to her, and since the Mind aspect is based around cognition, and obviously no one can work with information they don't have, it's reasonable to assume that she can't see an outcome based on info she doesn't know. This means that in the "stab that guy, not this guy" analogy, Mind powers wouldn't account for a truck about to plow through the wall at the second guy (and by extension you if you try to stab him) if you don't know there's a truck coming. In the Vriska example mentioned above, Terezi doesn't see anything she can't already predict normally with what she knows: there's an uber-powerful Omnicidal Maniac flying around, Vriska is a Leeroy Jenkins, Vriska is outside, when she flies Vriska leaves a trail of sparkling blue pixie dust behind her, Terezi has a sword and an opening to stab Vriska In the Back before she can leave. She can't see John, who as far as she knows is halfway across the void and incapable of time travel, stepping in to give Vriska a concussion under the advice of herself three years into a Bad Future.

This essentially turns Seer powers into a faster way to come to conclusions one could make the normal way, with added visuals (scents?) available to her specifically, which shouldn't be too op, I don't think.

You're right, it doesn't. Can't be too safe with certain abilities here, though, and I wasn't sure how it exactly worked. So long as that's the only power you'll be having her...have.

This, Terezi is approved.

I was originally going to introduce a Batman character (Nightwing, Tim, Oracle, or Ethan Bennett), but then I remember this guy:

  • Name: Lieutenant Gadget
  • Universe: Gadget and the Gadgetinis (mostly, check the Misc. section for more info).
  • Appearance: He's gotten a bit of a makeover since his Inspector days.
  • Personality: From a surface level, Gadget is considered to be the ideal lawman: he's lawful, kindhearted, selfless, loyal, and dedicated to the job. His optimism is one of his great strengths, allowing him to persevere through dangerous or tricky situations through some quick, improvised ideas based on what facts are currently available. He is blindingly sociable, causing him to quickly become allies with those that aren't considered a perceived threat to him, others, or themselves. He is also pretty strict against engaging in violence, opting to find other ways at reducing potential casualties unless it's a last resort. Even then, the cyborg simply will not kill!
On the flipside, Gadget, unknowingly, struggles between the line of the incompetence and competence due to his naivety. While the detective can be perceptive with any piece of information, he has a tendency to misinterpt (and that's if he doesn't flat out discard it). Also, he can't seem to help himself with getting sidetracked by other events around him. This isn't due to laziness or boredness, but rather genuine curiosity. Gadget is also known to be gullible at times, even when he tries to look out for suspicious happenings around him.
  • Backstory: Gadget's early life is shrouded in mystery, especially with how he became a bionic supercop. One rumor states that he "fell down a flight of stairs after slipping on a banana peel", while another cites his explosive near-death experience chasing down the man who would later become the villainous "Dr. Claw".
Whatever the case, Gadget was adopted into the Metro City Police Department as a detective. He tasked with investigating and stopping local affairs involving the terrorist group known as M.A.D. With an impressive success rate to boot (thanks in large part to the (unbeknownst) assistance from his niece and hound), Gadget had seemingly defeated M.A.D's influence in the city.
Afterward, Gadget was promoted to W.O.M.P, an international affairs organization, to continue foil more crime worldwide. During this time, M.A.D had resurfaced once more into a global threat. Now the newly appointed lieutenant will have to stop the terrorist group once more...hopefully without putting everyone else in danger.
  • Powers/Skills: Gadget is a powerful cyborg packed with various equipment and tools. He can lift around half a ton, survive moderately harsh environmental hazards, and operates above an average human's endurance rate. His hand to hand fighting skills are nothing to write about, but they can get the job against weaker opponents if he chooses to do so (he rather talk first).
His cyborg chassis, however, can create some occasional issues as a result of the scatterbrained nature of Gadget's mind and his body. For the sake of familiarity and "reliability", Gadget normally summons the following gadgets through the audible command, "Go Go Gadget [insert the desired tool]" :
    • Gadget Hat Arm: This function allows Gadget to unleash a 3 meter, retractable extending arm from his detective hat. The arm usually comes out bare-handed, but it can pull out a stop sign, a hammer, a magnifying glass, an umbrella or megaphone if they were stated with the original command.
    • Gadget Hat Siren: Whenever he needs to provide light, whether to signal others or light dim areas, a dome-shaped police light appears station on his hat
    • Gadget Copter: His personal form of aerial travel creates a radar-equipped helicopter helmet allowing him to fly and hover around the skies. It is possible to have one or two people cling on to him for transport, but the risk of technical failure increases from the added weight.
    • Gadget Eyes: His bionic eyes alter themselves into a "Detective Vision"-like viewing experience. In conjunction with his available enhanced senses, the new display scans and process information from sonar and thermal based means.
    • Gadget Cuffs: These simple handcuffs function to link the captive with Gadget in order to arrest them. They have no special quirks.
    • Gadget Neck/Arms/Legs: Gadget can extend the length of his neck, legs, and neck approixmentally 4.5 meters as a quick way to grapple himself. He can use the force of the extension to launch himself or others.
    • Gadget Blimp: Gadget's suit is able to transform him into a floatation device, with a literal application in the sky.
    • Gadget Wrist System: A holo-screen on Gadget's wrist that works as a shareable screen to display information or contact others through video chat.
    • Gadget Fingers: Both pairs of Gadget's hands have an identical set of the following tools (which can spawn from the index to ring fingers): a laser, a screwdriver, a drill bit, a mini refillable liquid or putty hose, and a flashlight. In addition, his thumb and pinky fingers can form a phone-like device.
    • Gadget Tie: The detective's tie can form a lasso to grapple himself to another object or detach to restraint anything.
    • Gadget Skates/Skies: His footwear can convert into rocket-propelled skates or skies as an alternative form of ground travel.
    • Gadget Magnetic Shoes: These sensitive soles allow Gadget to scale up areas that would normally be inaccessible due to the gravity. However, depending on their current magnetism setting, they could potentially affect the function of local machinery (including himself) or attract unwanted ferrous items.
  • Equipment: Besides being a plethora of gadgets by himself, Gadget has The GadgetMobile. This four seated, durable vehicle serves as an extension of the bionic hero, offering its own travel-based augmentation when traveling to new places through a similar "Go Go GadgetMobile" command (though it doesn't require Gadget's unique vocals):
    • Flight: The vehicle adopts an aeroplane-inspired design to travel across the skies. A grappling function is available to attach itself to objects.
    • Boat: The vehicle converts into an amphibious boat that travels around 58 mph.
  • Misc.: If it's alright with the thread creator, this version of Gadget's a Composite Character of the unaired original series pilot (which was handwaved as "canon" with Gadget adopting a moustache disguise), the original series and, by extension, the Gadget and the Gadgetinis series in terms of personality and available gadgets.

[up][up] All of my first-hand knowledge of Inspector Gadget stems from the apparently poorly-received live action films. So while I can't exactly say for his performance in the different series...

He looks to be a fine fit. Nothing too wrong with his loadout, though I would like a slight clarification on how the Gadget Goggles function - mostly just how the x-ray works, because I'm pretty sure it doesn't follow real-life logic.

Other than that, Gadget is accepted. You're free to post in the roleplay, as everyone is still in the starting Room.

No need to apologize, you aren't in the wrong for wanting to get better.

Adding a bit more to it, for one. Right now it's just single lines for everything.

Explain her personality a bit more, go into detail about her backstory, that sort of thing. Also, just for credibility's sake, put the thing about her never forgetting her camera into the part about her actually having the camera.

Question — Would Sherlock Holmes and John Watson (from the original Doyle stories) be acceptable as a duo? I was thinking about keeping them in more or less the same roles as in the stories, with Watson doing the narration and Holmes doing the investigating.

Yes, Sherlock and Watson would count. You can't really have one without the other, after all.

Korodzik Since: Jan, 2001
#66: Jul 2nd 2017 at 2:57:10 AM

  • Name: Sherlock Holmes
  • Universe: The original Sherlock Holmes canon by Arthur Conan Doyle, sometime after Holmes's "return from the dead" but before his retirement, i.e. sometime in 1894-1904.
  • Appearance: Holmes on right, Watson on left
  • Personality: Holmes lives for the pleasure of pitting his wits against baffling mysteries — and the more unusual a given case, the better. He loathes being idle, and falls into apathy if not supplied with a satisfying problem for too long; however, when he's on a case, he displays downright maniacal energy and can seem tireless. He enjoys dazzling others with his intellectual superiority, and has a habit of not revealing his conclusions until the end for dramatic effect. He is antisocial and doesn't seek company — other than Watson's, that is — and he prides himself on his rational and balanced mind; sometimes he may come across as cold or dispassionate.
  • Backstory: Little is known about Holmes's early life. He was born around 1854. His interest in detection began in the university, and he took it up as a profession upon graduating. Since 1881 he began living with John Watson, who, after witnessing Holmes's brilliancy in solving the "Study in Scarlet" case and how it was downplayed in the newspapers, decided to publish a writted account of Holmes's success; the detective's fame began growing at this point, and soon he became well-known as the go-to name for cases where police was helpless, even being hired by governments and crowned heads of Europe. A landmark event in Holmes's career was his 1891 confrontation with "the Napoleon of Crime", Dr. Moriarty, which ended in the apparent death of both. Holmes reappeared several years later, having faked his death, and he continued his detective career.
  • Skills:
    • Holmes believes that "all knowledge comes useful to the detective", and thus is quite erudite in a wide variety of topics, especially those related to criminology — poisons, ciphers, and the like. In particular, he is an expert on drawing conclusions from minute details of physical evidence, such as footprints, letters, writing, or gunpowder residue. Of course, his knowledge dates back to the 1890's and thus may prove woefully insufficient in certain contexts...
    • An expert boxer, swordsman, a singlestick fighter, and trained in the Japanese martial art of "Bartitsu".
    • A master of disguise — capable of making himself unrecognizable even to Watson — as well as an excellent actor.
  • Equipment: None.

  • Name: John H. Watson, M.D.
  • Personality: Watson isn't stupid, though by no means as brilliant as Holmes. He is fiercely loyal to his friend, and won't shy from assisting him even in risky or illegal acts, if this is what Holmes demands of him to solve the case. He is also a man of honor and of his word, and one that can be trusted with a secret.
  • Backstory: Dr. Watson served as a surgeon in the army during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Wounded during the Battle of Maiwand, he was sent back to England, and soon afterwards moved in at Baker Street 221B with Sherlock Holmes, then a still relatively obscure detective who was looking for someone to share the rent. Watson was put off by Holmes's strange habits and initially unexplained profession, but was highly impressed after witnessing the detective's skill and since then has been his biographer of sorts, describing Holmes's most interesting cases in The Strand magazine. After the "Sign of the Four" case, Watson married Mary Morstan, a governess, and moved out of Baker Street. Their marriage was happy, but Mary died sometime between 1891 and 1894, and after Holmes's return Watson resumed living with him.
  • Skills: A doctor of medicine of high skill (his knowledge is state-of-the-art by standards of his time.)
  • Equipment: None.

My general plan is for Watson to narrate the posts (though if necessary, I might also switch to Holmes's perspective.)

I can see that the first case has already begun, and the other characters already went in. How should I handle Holmes and Watson's arrival, then? I understand they are going to end up in the Briefing Room, but are there NPC's waiting there to give them a briefing?

Hey Truth, is this still open?

If so, I'd like to join up as the Twelfth Doctor. I mean, yes, he's not officially a detective, but come on. Every single episode he solves a mystery. And he pretty much acts like a private investigator, the only thing missing is just him taking up the actual job (there's even an Eight Doctor audio story where he acts as a private detective in 1930's New York, so that's gotta count for something...)

In addition, if you're OK with him, would it be fine if I bring along the TARDIS? It'll be incapable of transporting him anywhere, so it'll basically be like a giant home base and closet inside a police box. And I won't do that cheap "I have something in the TARDIS just for this particular occasion" that the writers like to pull out every once in a while- unless that something is just more clothes and a guitar.

EDIT: Oh snap, almost forgot! Would it be okay if he brought along Bill? She's his companion, and they have solved a bunch of mysteries together, and I just thought it'd be really cool to have her along for the game.

  • Name: The Doctor.
  • Universe: Doctor Who
  • Appearance: Not as grumpy as he seems.
  • Personality: The Twelfth Doctor can best be described as a mixture between a grumpy teacher, a giddy magician and a punk rocker past his prime. A blunt pragmatist, he lacks the quirky and sometimes wacky nature of his predecessor's incarnation, favoring 'sophistication' and a 'timeless sartorial elegance', which, to the untrained eye, might make him seem like a selfish, cold and unpleasant person (which is not wrong, he really doesn't like being touched). Despite all of that, the Twelfth Doctor still has the love for exploration, discovery and helping people that all of his past incarnations harbored... he just won't come up with catchphrases or struggle with using a weapon or not (if lives are on the line, the Doctor does not hesitate). He will probably tell you to 'shh'. Don't take it personal.
  • Backstory: A long, long time ago, the Doctor was an alien who lived in a planet called Gallifrey. He was part of a species known as the Time Lords, beings who, over time, managed to harness the power of travelling in space and time. One day, for various reasons, the Doctor decided he had enough of the Time Lords, climbed aboard a TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space, a machine capable of doing, well, a lot of things) and started traveling throughout the universe. Over centuries, he went through eleven other incarnations, met and befriended several companions, fought against pretty much every alien species in the known universe and became well-known throughout the universe. Pretty typical stuff.
  • Powers/Skills: As a Gallifreyan, the Doctor has two hearts. Whilst this doesn't really makes him faster or stronger, it does help him whenever things that would usually kill a normal human happen to him. Apart from that, the Doctor is notorious for having no abilities other than being really smart and observant, along with having twelve lifetimes of information stored up in his head. This means he knows his way around some kinds of technology, like computers, Rubik's cubes, and most importantly, guitars.
  • Equipment:
    • The Doctor has two objects known as the sonic screwdriver (a handheld machine capable mostly of unlocking doors, interfacing with computers, analyzing materials, amongst other uses- never works on wood)...
    • .. and psychic paper (a blank paper which shows the person looking at it whatever its world's version of 'the highest order' is- so, for example, a British royal guard would see 'Envoy of the Queen'), but his most important equipment is:
    • ... the TARDIS. Although it looks like a police box, it is actually an extremely complicated vehicle, with the big gist being that it is bigger on the inside and capable of holding an unknown number of rooms... which include:
      • The Control Room: where the magic happens. Here, by fiddling with all sorts of levers and buttons, the Doctor can take the TARDIS to anywhere in space and time. Except he can't do it right now, because something has made it incapable of leaving its current place. Fantastic.
      • Accommodations: The Doctor usually has a room for himself and for his companions, but he will never let you get anywhere near his room. Bill has a room, but she rarely uses it, and as such it is sparsely decorated.
      • The Library: A... well, library, containing books from all over the universe. Will be approved on a case-by-case basis, but if it's been written, it's probably here.
      • The Wardrobe: A room containing the Doctor's previous favorite clothes, along with clothing that might prove useful depending on the situation (space suits, formal wear, winter wear, time-sensitive wear, among others).
      • Kitchen: it's a kitchen. The Doctor makes a mean (microwave) casserole.
  • Misc.: He has a chalkboard in his control room and he will use it.

  • Name: Bill Potts. Or just Bill.
  • Universe: Doctor Who
  • Appearance: Mostly harmless.
  • Personality: Bill's a lover of both science and science fiction, taking up the Doctor's offer of mentoring and travels as a way to satisfy her inquisitive and curious nature. Said nature also manifests itself in how she will often not take 'no' or 'just trust me' for an answer she doesn't find 'good enough', or how she'll often speak her mind no matter how dangerous the situation may be.
  • Backstory: An orphan, Bill was brought up by a foster mother who didn't have a lot of money to send her to an university, so instead she got a job serving chips at St. Luke's University and visited the Doctor's classes on her free time. Noticing her potential (and after the girl she fancied turned out to be a sentient puddle), the Doctor offered himself to be her personal tutor, taking Bill on several adventures throughout the cosmos.
  • Powers/Skills: Bright and quick-witted, one could say Bill's brain is her big skill, but that would exclude her chip-serving abilities.
  • Equipment: Nothing.
  • Misc.: She hopes she'll one day meet an actual Xenomorph, no matter what the Doctor says.

Yeah, I'm not seeing anything that needs done away with.

Doctor Who and Bill are accepted!

I think you could just have the TARDIS show up on the lawn of the manor, since that would get a lot of the awkward stuff out of the way. We'll figure out some techno-babble reason why it won't work after that.

And the sign-ups are now officially CLOSED. Or at least, you can sign up, but not take part in the roleplay until later on.
