[up][up]Oh yeah. I mean there has to be another trope for it.

Anymore opinions on the Top Gun example here?

I don't know any place where they are more popular, but I don't know many fanfiction sites, but the two I know have more fanfics of GumballxPenny and DarwinxCarrie, and on the comments on her page on the Gumball wiki that are related with shipping 18 or 19 made by different userrs (there is one in a languaje that I don't know that could ship them, but I couldn't confirm) says that she and Darwin are (or in the case of the comments posted before their Relationship Upgrade would be) a good couple, and only four that say that she should be with Gumball, and two that say that she shouldn't be with Gumball but don't say if she should be with Darwin, so I don't count them for DarwinxCarrie.

Okay. In that case, I say cut the Gumball/Carrie entry. The canon ship seems bigger everywhere, and on AO3 the ship only has 5 fics vs Gumball/Penny's 40 something.

I neither know that movie, but if there are more fanfics of other couple probably is a signal that is not an example.

I don't think we have a trope for the part of the couple remaining after Penball and Carwin become canon; but prbably we have something of the part about Ben considering the ship amusing (Approval of God?)

Anymore opinions on the Killing Eve example I brought up here?

[up]The most probable is that doesn't count, anyway in this moment is a ZCE, I say that we hide it until somebody can see more of the series and say if it's definitively a cut, or if it's a good example and expand it.

Haven't watched Killing Eve, but I agree that they're probably supposed to be canon. Also, as I said before, I agree with Maverick/Iceman because it definitely fits the bill.

Well, since we've covered Buffy...

From Angel

  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • Angel/Cordy eclipsed Angel/Buffy due to their chemistry and touching friendship on this show. Whether you liked how it was handled is more of a Broken Base.
    • Wesley/Fred is generally preferred over Gunn/Fred.
    • Angel/Darla also got a lot more fans in this series, arguing that they shared far more than "I stalked you at 15 and all we did was angst" Buffy/Angel.
    • Willow shared more chemistry with Fred in "Orpheus" than she did with Kennedy in the whole of Buffy's final season.

The first one seems fine. Unsure about Fred/Wesley. Both Fred/Wesley and Fred/Gunn ships are canon at some point and both have their fans and detractors. Definitevely no to Angel/Darla. Buffy/Angel and Angel/Cordelia are both significantly more popular. Ditto with Willow/Fred since Tara/Willow and Oz/Willow are more popular.

Angel/Cordy seems fine to keep. The other ones seem like cuts. If there is no clear favorite for Fred and both were canon. It makes it too murky for me to say keep. The other two are to overshadowed by far more popular ships. Though as an interesting aside Angel/Spike actually has more fanfiction on the AO3 Angel the Series tag. Not saying that counts though as AO3 notoriously favors slash, it is overshadowed by their ships with Buffy, and I can't find anywhere else that it is big.

Found this on Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade:

  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • While the game mechanically leaves Eliwood's significant other very open to player choice and the narrative can accommodate any of them, the fanbase has largely embraced the Eliwood/Ninian pairing that the game leans a bit on, as it makes the most narrative sense for both Elibe games, the fans find the two cute together, and with the advent of Heroes, it makes for a lot of potentially adorable and/or funny moments for the whole family in fan works.
    • Sonia and Ursula are popular with the Yuri Fan crowd. It doesn't help that Ursula's thoughts on Sonia are VERY easy to see as a Subordinate Excuse to the very end.
    • Jaffar/Nino is another popular OTP.
    • Serra/Lucius is quite popular, with its well-written and all-but-explicitly-romantic support that starts funny and eventually offers lots of interesting character development for both of them. However, they don't have a paired ending.

I don't think any of these examples fit the bill.

While technically most playable characters can be paired with multiple love interests, all of which are treated as equally valid, and in many cases each option has enough supporters that there is a fair amount of Ship-to-Ship Combat around them, certain ones are very heavily favored by the main narrative and gameplay mechanicsnote , and thus implicitly the creator-preferred choice.

As the above points out, Eliwood/Ninian and Jaffar/Nino are two such pairings. Ninian is strongly pushed as Eliwood's Implied Love Interest and likewise Jaffar/Nino have a non-optional established past as well. Moreover, while FE adaptations can be a questionable source as to what counts for "canonical" due to Depending on the Writer, at least one official light novel for the game explicitly pairs Eliwood and Ninian together, along with Lyn/Rath and Hector/Florina. This entry is basically redundant with that.

Sonia is technically married to Brendan, so there is a ship for Sonia/Ursula to compete with, but Sonia is also The Vamp and her relationship with Brendan portrayed in an unflattering light, so it's not exactly creator-favored. This example sounds more like a case of general Les Yay or Ho Yay.

And Serra and Lucius both have much more popular and also more canon-supported ships, Serra/Matthew and Lucius/Raven respectively. That said there is some small fandom support for this pairing despite their inability to get together, so it might fit under Ships That Pass in the Night.

[down] Oops, fixed that.

From YMMV.Private Practice:

  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Pete and Violet, Cooper and Violet in season 1, later Cooper and Charlotte.
    • Addison and Sam. ADDISON AND SAM, until recently when he started getting indecisive.
    • Also, Naomi and Gabriel.
    • Addison and Jake, on the grounds he actually likes kids and her.
    • Sheldon and Amelia have a pretty passionate fan base, although Ryan and James don't often get the Die for Our Ship treatment ( although that may be because Ryan did).

At least three of these have Official Couple potholed, so cut. Cooper/Violet seems less popular than Cooper/Charlotte, so cut. The final one is probably fine. Addison is where it gets tricky. Now by most accounts her most popular ships are with Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd, but the problem is that they are both actually from Grey's Anatomy. Which is where Addison is originally from. So I don't know how to treat her given these are about a spin off and Grey's has a bigger fandom.

So I don't know where else to bring this, but someone deleted this from YMMV.Live Free Or Die Hard:

  • Fan-Preferred Couple: While John McClane had his tumultuous marriage to Holly in previous movies and Matthew Farrell has his budding romance with Lucy in this one, fans expressed far more interest in McClane and Farrell getting together due to the movie being centered around their dynamic and Bruce Willis and Justin Long having good chemistry too. Most of the fanfiction about the film series as a whole is John/Matt.

Now they didn't leave an edit reason, but my guess is it's because neither have a creator preferred one. Because otherwise nothing here is untrue. This is indeed the most popular ship from the franchise. It's just Holly is gone by this point and Matt and Lucy never actually get together. Though I wonder if the end with Matt and Lucy was meant to be a Maybe Ever After. In which case it counts. I would like opinions on this before I potentially remove it from the Live-Action Films page.

[up]Well just because we don't see Farrell in the next movie, that doesn't mean he and Lucy aren't currently together. McClane really has no other love interest besides Holly in the film series (he lets the desk clerk at the airport in the second one off easy when she asks him out) and that makes it clear to me that even when they're done that she's still the CP one. So yeah, I think the example still clearly fits and we need to invite the Troper who deleted it here to avoid an edit war.

I think it's worth keeping since tropes are flexible and it's definitely not a creator-preferred one.

[up][up]I already invited them here.

I mean I personally think it count. It hits all the boxes, and while they don't get together, the movie ends with Matt and Lucy both telling John they like the other, so I think they had a Maybe Ever After. Though most fans just shipped John and Matt.

I suppose you could argue that John and Holly is more official than him and Farrell. I mean John and Holly were at least together for a while. John and Farrell never official got together in the franchise.

I think the fact they were together in Canon, while Mc Clane and Farrell never were together should be enough to mean Holly is creator-preferred (at least with regards to Farrell).
