Going back to my Fire Emblem x SAO fusion fic, I actually think that Having a Brainwashed and Crazy Kirito kill the Moonlight Black Cats because of an enemy with a Berserk Staff is cold as ice.

I'm beginning to be convinced that if I'm ever going to do the blatant Eirika x Lyon shipfic I want to do, I'm going to have to make it a Highschool AU.

Fortunately, I can still mock, subvert, deconstruct, reconstruct, exaggerate, and/or otherwise muck around with the tropes involved to make something cool out of it anyways.

I have a vague awareness of who Kirito is, but who are the Moonlight Black Cats?

That could be fun, but why does it need to be a High School AU?

The Moonlight Black Cats are a five man guild that Kirito joins in episode 3 who are a bunch of red shirts who die horribly because they were a bunch of dumbasses who couldn't have killed themselves faster. Their female member Sachi served as The Gwen Stacy for Kirito who just one episode later just seems to act like nothing happened.

Well, if you want to kill them off in such a fashion, I suppose that'd be fine, although maybe you'd want to shy away from the Gwen Stacy trope? Seems a little dated to me.

Said character has barely any character other then being Kirito's Gwen Stacy (Hell even with out Kirito, she would have died.) so I don't feel like saving her. Besides it will be more traumatic for Kirito as I want to un Gary Stu Kirito and actually salvage something good.

After that, we'll have an arc with Asuna (who by this point is a Falcon Knight) and Lisbeth as they gather materials for Lisbeth's armory so she can forge better weapons for Klein and Agil's band of mercenaries (who quickly become the Greil Mercenaries in this fic.)

Because there are some works that I love so much, I end up treating the original canon as a bit of a Sacred Cow (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann being one such example; GaoGaiGar being another), and I never manage to write anything for those sorts of works unless I decide to try and transplant it into a different setting.

I think I'm realizing that FE 8 is another instance of "I love the original canon too much to screw with it", hence the need for an AU.

I can still keep elements of the original, though - instead of Eirika, Ephraim, Lyon, etc. being literal royalty, I can write them as the modern equivalents - heirs to holy-shiznit-rich corporations/conglomerates.

I think Lyon in particular lends himself rather well to the Lonely Rich Kid kind of archetype, particularly with the Shrinking Violet personality he appeared to have in the end-of-game flashback where he met the Renais twins for the first time.

I mean, I can even justify Erika still being a Hot Chick with a Sword by having her as the captain (or star member, whatever) of the academy's Fencing Club. Ephraim with spears is a bit harder to justify, but as The Ace, he'd probably be the captain of whatever main sports club/team the academy has.

And then because I've already made it an AU, that means I can left-turn into a Cosmic Horror Story by writing an invasion from Legions of Hell led by Formortiis! ...the Legions of Hell who are very weak against love, or something...

Basically, as long as I can find myself some kind of half-workable starting point, I can usually find some means of justifying damn near anything. The sky's the limit, Comrades!

Abridged Kirito is good for a comedy series, but for a somewhat serious-ish thing? No. Just. No. That's a bad idea

I guess I can have Kirito act like somewhat normal but quickly becomes more of an asshole the more time goes by.

Finally got Kirito's development squared away.

Okay, I think I have a settled for a character arc for Kirito. During the beginning, Kirito is a B-type tsundere who is cool headed when he's playing the game and teaching people how to play the game but will get easily flustered by someone who flirts with him (Oh hai Asuna) or by people who expect him to help them because he's a beta tester. When we get to the Boss 10 maps later (A scrubby general) that Diabel dies to because he wanted the Brave Lance because he was a greedy fuck and Kibaou called him a cheater and an asshole for using him to figure out that the boss has a Javelin, Kirito and his friends and sister (Asuna, Leafa, Lisbeth, Klein, Silica and Agil) verbally tear him apart and proceed to next chapter. When the chapter with the Moonlight Black Cats happens Kirito is a jerk with a heart of gold by this point as Kibaou is spreading nasty rumors about Kirito and it's honestly getting to him. After the Moonlight Black Cats incident, Kirito is a death seeker and is a full blown asshole. It takes all of his friends to put him into basically suicide watch for 2 months for him to calm down. When Asuna finally confesses her feelings towards him and they go on their 'honeymoon' after they get married, Kirito gets better.

Well, not completely better but functional.

I'm wondering if I should have special promotion items like the Elysian Whip in New Mystery.

Like have a item that turns a Mage into a Mage Knight.

I might give one to Silica so I can have a 'Pina' in the game. Well as time goes on, several. As for not making her into a Wyvern Rider, I don't think she has the personality for it. Yet. I won't make her into a Pegasus Knight because it would be expected and Kayaba has a class randomizer that gives people random classes in the equivalent of 25-30 chapters and giving her a class that fits her would be immersion breaking. Like Kirito, Asuna and other magic classes, Silica is fragile. Can promote into a Sage which boasts massive magical power and gains staves (healing, buffs and status ailments in one package) and light magic or a Valkyrie which gives Silica a horse which lets her move much farther in a short amount of time. Gets into a relationship with Sinon close to a year in the game.

Lisbeth is a Knight. She's more or less the same as in canon, though she recognizes Kirito because she goes to school with him and talks to him on their way to school. She more or less starts off joining Agil and Klein's band of friends who become one of the most respected and powerful armies in the game even succeeding the Knight of the Blood Oath. Lisbeth as a Knight is powerful but slow and like any other Fire Emblem title, magic is her Kryptonite. She can promote into a General which is a bigger, beefier Knight with access to axes or to Great Knight where she'll get a horse and access the entire Weapon Triangle so she can abuse that for all her worth.

For the record there are three Weapon Triangles. The main one and the one that Lisbeth might use is Swords, Spears and Axes. Swords beats Axes, Axes beats Spears and Spears beats Swords.

Sinon is an Archer when she tried to be a Cleric because she was tired of being Ranged DPS but when Kayaba activated the class randomizer when he finished his speech Sinon got the class she was good at but the one she was tired of playing The feelings of resentment and agitation quickly die down and are replaced with pride as she becomes the best ranged fighter in the game. Her pride bites her in the ass as it get her comrades killed and Silica along with Asuna, Klein, Agil and a just-I-got-off-of-suicide-watch and reluctant Kirito. Silica hangs out with Sinon and they have a heart-to-heart about losing comrades and they become friends.

Really cute fic I found about Shigure and Kana's relationship as siblings. It's formatted as an anthology of short stories, so it's a quick (but still satisfying) read.

(I swear the joke about double penetration in the first chapter's author note is not representative of the fic, which is otherwise G-rated.)

Going to bump this for two reasons. The first is to share this Elise x Takumi fic (G-Rated) I found while browsing ao3. I think it's paced pretty well (5 decently long chapters in and they're not together as a couple yet, just good friends) and the two leads interact with each other nicely whole staying in-character.

The second is to try to start a discussion. Do you guys read FE fics just for shipping (or mostly for shipping) for other reasons? I feel like I'm a combination of both: I try to find original plots and whatnot, but I'll dive into a shipping fic if it looks good.
