So, who's going to make a crowner for this?

military hardware
Thing is, it's not always military hardware, per se. For example, of the numerous Megazords, only one was remotely linked to the military.

The way I see it, "Stealing an enemy vehicle for use against them" and "Stealing an enemy mecha to use against them" are basically the same: for the most part, giant robot series don't have an explicit rule about the people who use the robots, so basically anyone could crack the hatch and steal it. Same as a tank.

I do agree that there should be a seperate page for prototype cars or new non-combatant technology, but if it's combat related in the past or future I think it should go under Gundamjacking. It might promote other people to research the series the trope name is based on, and might even get them into it.

Stealing prototypes of non-military/national security uses, like if Company X wanted to steal a prototype Super Carrot Choper from Y Inc, would be industrial espionage. Do we have that?

Industrial Espionage is something way different for this.

not necessarily. If we're talking one company stealing a prototype from another company with the intent of producing it themselves/reverse engineering it, then it would totally be Industrial/Corporate Espionage

It's way different from this, but not necessarily from the hijacking trope. I think it fits much more of the MacGuffin type of trope rather than this, since it's not something that is likely to be actually useful to the heroes.

I was using military hardware in the sense of "pilot-able weapons platform", a Humongous Mecha counts.

So if there is no trope for other vital things being stolen by the opposition, do we make one?

(I'm still a tad new to this, sorry)

[up][up][up] These are stolen and if successful they are used on the enemy's side real fast to kill people.

Say Gundam Seed first episode ZAFT's Athrun Zala and his team steal 4 Prototype Mobile Suits from the Earth Federation and make it back to their ship. The next day Athrun and his team are using said suits aganst the Earth Federation killing people left and right. They also get the tech but that is secondary to the other impacts to the story, in addition to the fact that said thief is always the pilot of the suit he stole after that.

Industrial Espionage is for data and money they want the tech and knowledge and usually comes out quite differently from this trope.

A Gundamjack gives a new and very powerful enemy to the group that had their mech stolen, it is a weapon of war in a war. Yes this breaks laws of common sense as you expect that they would take it apart and study it as that would be far more valuable to the war but nope... Some do Handwave it though by saying sensor data is enough or something. (In addition to the fact they never seem to require keys to start nor spare parts after being stolen... Unless that is a big plot point.)

Just started a YKTTW for just that here. Or at least for the notion of immediately pressing the commandeered military hardware into service against its former owners.

I'm well aware that it needs quite a lot of work, but I'll get it done. Or hand it off to someone else.

I can't read the whole thread right now, but the Front Mission page lists this trope since there is a feature to make a pilot eject from his vehicle. For the mechs in the game, taking it over before it's pilot can return will let you keep it after battle. It also mentions that you can hijack tanks and helicopters in the same manner.

It doesn't just apply to mechs in general, but the trope seems to have drifted to hijacking combat vehicles in combat. Mecha Hijacking or Mid Battle Hijacking could work.

Hm, Mid Battle Hijacking sounds interesting. It would make the current trope namer a non-example though. Let me check on that YKTTW. I'll start that Hijacking High Value Targets thingy shortly.

Well, I'm seeing some grounds for a separate trope if we can find enough examples to back it up, if nothing else.

We're in the YKKTW stage, if you think that doesn't merit a TRS thread, lock up.

Didn't we already decide on making the supertrope and a couple other subtropes? Deboss made at least one YKTTW.

Calling crowner in favor of broadening the trope.
