Alright, so in TRS Badass Gay came up for discussion and it was agreed that there appears to big problem with the Badass X tropes in general, which needs to be sorted out until something can be ruled on for Badass Gay.
Here's a courtesy link: TRS page. And Badass page with its subtropes. You can also visit the sandbox page here.
Noted Problems include:
- Tropes are just listings of characters people thing are badass who happen to have a certain trait. (The Badass + Trait Problem)
- Badass X as a naming scheme is actually very vague and doesn't give a lot of insight into what the character trope actually is, assuming it is a trope.
- Badass X as a naming scheme proliferates the use of Badass + Trait 'tropes'.
Suggested things to do include:
- Make it a requirement that a badass character trope means a character is "badass because of a trait", or "badass in spite of a trait".
- Renaming away from the Badass X naming scheme as much as possible.
- Cut, redefine or re-purpose things that are just Badass + trait.
There are also a lot of tropes that seem to be valid character-types, but have the naming scheme 'Badass X', when there's more to the trope than that. There are also a lot of prop or event or whatever tropes that need to be gone through as well.

It depends on the trope, some of them are very much tropes outside of Rule of Cool. Which is something only happens because it is cool, breaking the Willing Suspension of Disbelief because it is so cool looking but it is actually really stupid when you actually thing about it.
Well it had more to do with Royals Who Actually Do Something than a badass trope and this topic seems to have just ignored the whole thing.

My say on the matter is that the Badass trope shouldn't be on the work page unless it doesn't fit any of the subtropes. Otherwise, redundant. Furthermore, I don't think the Badass trope page should have anything on it that doesn't have the word "badass" in it. This is to keep it focused.
Bumbing for two reasons.
1. It's been a week since the last post
2. More votes for the crowner.
In other news, I'm going to look through the Badass Tropes page. I'm also going to alphabetize the tropes on the main. Not removing or rewriting, just implanting alphabetical order and proper trope indentation.
The thing with Ghost Rider and Asmodeus's race out of Mephisto's realm is that the one while the winner would leave, the loser would stay behind and be "punished"(Asmodeus was blasted out of existence).
That was the reasoning for including it under "other".
After one week, 13 votes (yeas:9 nays:4) and a 2.25 : 1 ratio, I say we're ready to call this crowner.
Is it time for a new crowner? There are still some issues to resolve with Badass itself. So far it has been decisively voted that it was to become an exampleless Fan Speak page.
We still need to decide:
- Whether to cut non-ZCE example wicks.
- Whether we should list subtropes on the Badass page.
- Volunteer sponsors for optional YKTTWs for alternative definitions proposed in the last crowner and to see whether any of the examples from the trope's old definition (stored here here and here) are worth salvaging.

You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"I agree that it is time for a new crowner. This one here has been running for almost 3 weeks and has a 3:1 ratio. Let's move on and continue making progress.
I'm still confused on whether Badass by itself allows off-page example wicks or not.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? How about we close the current crowner and then throw up a multiple action crowner to decide the lingering issues with the Badass such as that one?
NECRO BUMB! Ok, we really need to close this crowner now. It has a clear winner and it has been going for a month.
Called crowner in favour of disambiguating.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI've made Like A Badass Out Of Hell into a disambiguation and will move the remaining examples to the tropes that were split off.
As for Badass, we still have a bunch of things to do as I outlined in post #1507. We'll need volunteers if anyone wants to YKTTW the alternative definitions of badass proposed in the previous crowner. Rjinswand has been MIA for months; I'l try to finish his sorting of the trope list. Lastly, shall we make a single-prop crowner to decide whether or not to cut the Badass wicks?
EDIT: Also, what about the image? It only fits the "character as Rule of Cool" type.

You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"I'm not a fan of the page image, but can I clarify exactly what Badass is now?
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. It's a Fan Speak term now, similar to Mary Sue. Badass itself is no longer seen as a trope because it's actually used to mean about 10 different things. We've swapped in the new definition, but there's just unfinished works with everything else about it—the trope list, the examples, the wicks, the other definitions that might be optionally YKTTW'd.
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"So with the recent changes, for clarification, should Badass itself - not one of its derivatives like World of Badass or Badass Bookworm, but Badass specifically - be removed from Work pages when encountered as a trope?
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.^ Zero context examples of Badass can be cut. Whether all examples should be cut is one of the things we still need to crowner. If no one objects, I'll make a single-prop crowner in a few days with the following question:
"Since Badass is no longer a trope but a Fan Speak page similar to Mary Sue, should we cut wick examples?"
I'll start an IP thread for Badass as well so we can decide what to do with the image. Here.

You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"Got it.
I'll be sure to vote in that crowner when it's made.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Thanks for the clarification. I thought that was the position, but it's good to be absolutely certain. I'll look forward to the crowner.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.I've made the new crowner. I've clarified the wording a bit to reflect the decision made in the previous crowner to the following:
"Since Badass was voted to be redefined as an example-less Fan Speak page similar to Mary Sue, should we cut wick examples?"

You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"Crowner's hooked; I'll adjust the thread title shortly.
I'm glad to see this crowner doing well. There are plenty of sub-tropes to put context into.
I've just been made privy to the new changes about Badass and want to ask one thing.
Okay, so it seems since Badass is now a Fan Speak term, it must be removed from wicks and work pages, right? Or at least translated properly into the appropriate subtrope like Badass Bookworm or Badass Adorable, right?
So what if none of the subtropes truly apply to the character? I honestly considered Badass as the last-resort, go-to term for characters/whatever who do not have a subtrope but are still very badass. So what should be done in that case? Say nothing at all?
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.Yeah, that's been my main issue too.
Eating a Vanilluxe will give you frostbite. You just don't add it.
So a lot of the sub-tropes on the Badass kind of coincide with Rule of Cool.
So...isn't that redundant.
