IMHO, I think that advertising should be honest. At least generally. It may be just a pet peeve of mine, but one should be truthful about the genre of film you're advertising. If it's a tragedy, say so. If it's a fanservice-laden exploitation film, just be out with it. You have enough of an audience either way. I think that if you're open about what kind of film you're making, you'll attract the audience you want. On the other hand I could just be naïve and living in a fantasy world. Either way, if you're giving me hot babes in skimpy outfits kicking Nazi ass, I'll see it. If you're giving me a serious story about introspection in a mental asylum, I'll see that too. Just don't be a smartass and lie to me.
What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly. They gave you your girls, didn't they?
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatI saw Cabin In The Woods because I knew it was made by Joss Whedon, whose work I really like and respect and because I like horror movies. I still haven't seen Sucker Punch, largely in part because of my understanding of the dishonesty in its advertising. I know I personally won't affect its profitability, but I also don't like boner confusion.

What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly.I actually thoroughly enjoy movies that contradict and/or subvert their trailers (assuming I actually enjoy the movie itself, obviously).
I don't recall the trailers to Cabin very well, but the movie was excellent because it was nothing like what was expected.
Also, this movie shouldn't make you feel bad for being a fan of horror movies. It should make you feel bad you for being a fan of pointlessly-violent, tortureporn movies that paint-by-numbers.
The only times I have issues with trailers are when they aren't honest about what is going to be in the movie, tell me too much about the film's story, or they don't set up the right mindset you need to be in to watch the movie.
I'm a critical person but I'm a nice guy when you get to know me. Now, I should be writing.Yep. That's the fine line between Never Trust a Trailer and Trailers Always Spoil.
What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly.I don't choose a movie based on trailers: I follow Word Of Mouth. Trailers will sucker you.
That's also why I never ever see a movie on opening night, or even on opening week.
And I think there's a literally a world of difference between enjoying exploiting defenceless young women, and enjoying watching a wovie about the struggles of defenceless exploited fictional young women. The former is evil, the second hurts absolutely no-one.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Zack Snyder disagrees, it seems.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatCitation found.
Pretty clear then. Snyder really doesn't like fanboy culture.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatTo which one must ask the obvious question: What are you doing in the business then, sir? : P
Proud member of the IAA What's the point of being grown up if you can't act childish? He's trying to make movies, like anyone. He just hates the kinds of guys that flock to the kinds of movies he makes. And when apparently the actresses in Sucker Punch kept hearing guys yell "SHOW US YOUR TITS" at them, it's not hard to agree with him. Fanboys can really make something toxic, look at how many of them flocked to defend notable sexist objectifier James Gunn just because his movie had a talking tree in it.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatYou lost me on James Gunn. : P
Proud member of the IAA What's the point of being grown up if you can't act childish? When he was announced as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, some folks on the internet were not happy because he'd made a lot of talk about what comic book women he not only found the hottest, but the ones he wanted to have sex with the most.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the Great-blinks- ...Some people need to get over themselves.
Proud member of the IAA What's the point of being grown up if you can't act childish? It is, absolutely. I find it interesting, in a lot of ways, that this movie – of all the movies I’ve made – has been universally hated by fanboys, which I find really interesting. It’s like a fanboy indictment, in some ways. They can’t have fun with the geek culture sexual hang ups.
Emphasis mine.
Interviewer:Yeah, it’s like a guilty-pleasure.
ZS: 100%. As long as you’re self-aware about it, then you’re okay.
Emphasis mine.
From the interview, I get a clear sense that ZS was playing around and attempting Crazy Awesome and making True Art, that he was having fun with those difficult concepts and dark, mixed feelings, and guilty pleasures, and I for one thought it was freaking awesome.
Me Too!. Is it the Angry Molesting Tree? He was creepy enough without a voice...
LOL, reminds me of how I was back when I was a Hormone-Addled Teenager, discussing with my BFF which girls in school we lusted after and speculating what sex with them would be like. But it's a little sad that a grown adult is doing that. It's appalling, but in a pitiful rather than outrageous way.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Let's be fair: anyone could have sex with Memetic Sex God Nightwing regardless of sexual preference
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Because that was totally the most offensive thing Gunn said in that post.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatNo, it was in fact the only salvageable thing.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Didn't he apologize for that later on? We all make mistakes, fellas.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Yea he apologized about it and regrets saying it.
(V)(;,,;)(V)He apologized, I just brought up the list to avoid Quote Mining.
Much like Spec Ops The Line, Sucker Punch is a Rorscharch Test. The people who were most offended by it were the ones who went into it for all the wrong reasons in the first place.
The same can probably be said of The Cabin In The Woods.
