Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Make a huge timer.
Set the time for the amount they are allowed to debate.
Start the timer.
Whenever one candidate gets interrupted, pause the timer, and then start it again once the interrupter shuts up and the actual candidate talks again.
Make the timer big so Trump can still see it, even without his glasses.
And if Trump goes off on an insane rambling, cut the mic.
That would be a start.

If only mods could thump presidential debate statements.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.I called my grandmother, who is intensely pro-Trump beyond all reason, after the debate to discuss how we thought it went, and even she thought Biden did a better job tonight. No doubt, despite some bad-looking moments and the overall low quality of the debate Biden's off to a fairly good start.

One of the staff on 538 said this but I agree with it wholeheartedly: this whole thing would have been better if this was a Zoom call. I feel like even with a mic mute feature Trump would just shout louder in an in-person setting.
I suppose neither candidate won which is ultimately a win for Biden but I was still hoping for something to increase my enthusiasm for Biden. Something to increase my confidence he'll be a confident leader that's dedicated to fixing our broken country. As is the most I can say about him is he's not Trump. And outperforming an oversized toddler really isn't inspiring for the long term.
Which is still enough to make me vote for him, mind you. A pile of rocks could be running against Trump and I'd still crawl over a mile of broken glass to vote for it.
I thought he seemed dedicated to trying to fix things, as much as you can appear dedicated when Trump is impossible to shut up.
Maybe he should just take an air horn next time and use it whenever Trump interrupts him.

Avatar SourceThe old windbag. Give Trump the world's smallest mic, and he'll deafen half the country with it.
Early numbers say most people think Biden won the debate:
CNN: 60% - 28%
CBS: 48% - 41%
Data for Progress: 51% - 39%
And apparently Biden raised $4 million in one hour.

I can't believe they're still trying to bring up Hillary Clinton.
So, it seems like the debate was a trainwreck but if it helped anyone t was Biden. Not that this changes my opinion on debates, though.
I don't think that Trump is evil enough to match up with the actual Nazis anywhere soon, though.

Okay, real talk. What if anything could Biden have done, keeping in mind he's debating a complete maniac, to give you that confidence and r enthusiasm.
I used to think he'd never be as bad as Bush but he's sterilizing women in concentration camps.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Oh, when Trump claimed that the "Portland sheriff" supports him... the closest relevant guy does not? What a shock.
Also Trump has tweeted for people to join a Trump army and watch polls. Also a shock.
And someone said that Hillary probably wanted to tell Trump to shut up. "You have no idea."

Avatar SourceHere’s the big takeaway from the debate:
Trump was asked to condemn white supremacists, and not only did he refuse to do so, he told them to “stand back and stand by.”
You know, as if he is their leader.
That’s the takeaway.
"Yup. That tasted purple.""I don't think that Trump is evil enough to match up with the actual Nazis anywhere soon, though."
He would, if they paid him.
Trump's level of evil is a reflection of what makes him look best.
Whether you consider diminished responsibility in the case of narcissism to factor into moral judgements is a different matter.
Avatar SourceNo, the problem with comparing Trump to the Nazis is that his deeds just don't measure up. Trump's concentration camps see forced sterilization, Nazi concentration camps saw millions of people shot, gassed or starved to death and they dropped broad hints that much (if not most) of Eastern Europe's population would be next in line.

Trump reminds me most of Fritz Kuhn who became the head of the American Nazi Party and promptly embezzled massive amounts of its funds to pay for his lavish lifestyle as well as multiple mistresses. When Fiorello La Guardia (yes, the one the airport is named for) wanted to destroy him for....well, being a Nazi in New York, he exposed this dreadful secret.
Kuhn defended it by saying as the Furher, he was allowed to do whatever the hell he wanted and anyone who disagreed wasn't a real Nazi.
Because they were Nazis.
This explains Trumpism to me.
La Guardia's response was to just toss his ass in jail, though.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Trump courts whoever will vote for him, whoever will pay his debts. He courts nazis because they vote for him. There has never been a bottom. Now he's courting terrorists and conspiracy theorists like Qanon. Why does he court Qanon? Cause they like him.
If gassing half the US population got him reelected, trump would do it. Cause he's already fine with blue states dying of disaster and disease. Something he proactive tries to encourage, by the way. Rewarding red states and withholding aid to blue states.
It doesn't matter if trump does or does not believe. It's beyond a shadow of a doubt that he's a fascist, out of convenience or out of ideology is something for historians to decide

He is genuinely evil.

Yeah, I wasn't joking when I said that.
The moderator needs to be able to moderate. And since you can't just go up and slap the president in the face to stun him into silence, that means cutting the mic. Obviously it goes both ways, but if Trump gets silenced then I expect it's less likely anyone else talking to him will immediately respond.
If nothing else because this way Biden might be able to actually finish a sentence when it's supposed to be a discussion section.
