@Rambler and Kuroi: Nobility being physically active was also a big deal into the Renaissance. An ideal Renaissance Man was expected to be good at sports, not just well-educated.
Academic Athlete, huh?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.@God: wut
At first I thought that was a quote from The Unnamable.
RE: Zomponies: I thought this one was pretty cool, at least as far as worldbuilding (or the opposite of building) goes. Not going to claim it's great literature, especially in terms of pacing, but it's worth a mention. And this has good character focus if you don't mind some squick (haven't read the sequels).

There is no beginning. There is no end. There is only... Hooty.I'm getting really sick of all the "character writes/edits a fanfic" fanfics that keep showing up. Haha we get it, meta commentary, how funny and original.
@Rambler: why, yes, it is. I actually like classic metal, back when it was more like harder rock. Dio, Judas Priest, and the like. I also like some heavier/newer metal, but you're right that it's generally not my genre.
As may be obvious at this point, though, I have extremely varied and eclectic taste in music. My fics alone have made reference to at least seven different artists, all from different genres.
Re: clothing; in addition to what Meta Four said about some variants of nobility emphasizing exercise, ponies might also place a different social emphasis on physical labor than humans. Even ponies who don't exercise like Rarity have been shown to be physically powerful like any other horse would be.
"Oh, I have servants to that sort of thing. But I could still take you in a fight if I needed to, ol' chap."

"The only way to truly waste an idea is to shove it where it doesn't belong."so I'm trimming down me to read list, something I haven't tried doing in ages.
of course, there's some reading being done, but most of it is seeing a fic, thinking "...what the hell was I thinking when I put this on the list?" and unfollowing it.
as do I! as should also be clear based on my human music fic
edit: speaking of odd things found in the depths of my too read alter list, I don't think I've ever seen an author do this before

XP granted for befriending a giant magical spider!...Something tells me that that's likely more entertaining than the story itself.
Reaction Image RepositoryHuh.
For a moment I thought you were talking about the Sleepless sequel.
Also, so long, cute/flirty Homestuck(?) avatar.
There is no beginning. There is no end. There is only... Hooty.I'll probably switch back to her eventually.
Also ugh I really need to get this chapter finished. I'm like a few paragraphs away. And then I get to spend a week editing it because the first draft is very meh.
Reaction Image RepositoryUgh, writing the next chapter of Inexcusable is so bizarre. I've set up a situation which has so little connection to the show, yet requires a bunch of canon characters to interact. It's making it so difficult to get a feel for what the characters will do.
My original plan was to have Princess Nightmare Moon reveal herself to Celestia, and then have Celestia talk with Twilight and Cadance and/or Discord talk with Nightmare Moon. But no matter how I approach it, Discord and Celestia don't sound like themselves, and Twilight and Cadance come off as too nonchalant.
It's not even a matter of keeping them consistent, it's just not having any idea what they would do.
Maybe I should actually hire an editor for The Sisters and The Dragon, let it stew a bit more while I work on that and see if any new approaches present themselves. I guess this is an inevitable shortcoming of relying on certain writing techniques for so long.
Or I could pull the trick I did with I Am Not the Actor and publish it one chapter at time so the audience can do my work for me, but I've been trying to avoid that lately.

"The only way to truly waste an idea is to shove it where it doesn't belong."@Clever: Fair enough. You come across to me as a stoic and a bit of a cynic, with high standards and little patience for anything that doesn't meet them, so I imagined your reaction to the kind of '70s/'80s hard rock practised by Dio and such would be along the lines of 'Bah! Cheesy, overblown pulp!'
Anyway, cool that you're into Judas Priest. I'm a bit of an obsessive fanboy of theirs, myself (3090 Last.fm plays and counting).
@JT: I still associate you most with the "humanised crazy Twilight" avatar, probably because that's still your avatar on Fimfiction.

Mache dich, mein Herze, rein...Lol, well, that's not an inaccurate summary of me.
I enjoy Word Salad Lyrics for their ability to create a sort of surrealist canvas. They pair a mood with ideas, but not in concrete terms. "Rainbow In The Dark" or "I Get Wet" or "Seven Nation Army" et. al. may not mean anything in particular, but they imply something. Pair that with the moodiness of the instruments, and it's a sort of meandering steroid for the imagination.
I use a lot of such music to write fiction to.
Alternately, their inability to be analyzed (due to lacking meaning) makes them a good excuse to turn off one's brain.
Or something.

"The only way to truly waste an idea is to shove it where it doesn't belong."Yeah, that's kinda been my go-to on most non TVT sites.
Reaction Image RepositorySpeaking of which, Kanye West's POWER is a wellspring of inspiration. I'm thinking of writing a fic that quotes the entire song, one way or another. The fic would be a Power Ponies story.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I just recently realized how ridiculous an example of Word Salad Lyrics one of my favorite songs is, but, again, it's all about the mood.
Not sure where the meeting point of industrial rock and ponies is, though. The Jubiverse, maybe? I always connected that to "Eyes Without a Face", for obvious reasons, but...

There is no beginning. There is no end. There is only... Hooty.I just stumbled on the most beautiful expression. One guy, talking about his new suit; "An understated ensemble that puts the 'b' in 'subtle'." Second guy: "There's a 'b' in subtle?!" First guy: *grin*
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Bleh, I don't like Word Salad Lyrics, rather have ones that are more direct and make sense.
Music has always been more important than the lyrics to me. That's why I listen to music rather than reading poetry. So I can overlook meaningless, cheesy, or just plain dumb lyrics if the music is good enough.
Not me. If the lyrics make no sense, or worse, are just plain stupid. I have a hard time caring about or liking the song itself.
Call it morning driving through the sun and in and out the valley!
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I sort of go both ways with regard to lyrics. I can deal with Word Salad Lyrics because they're obviously only chosen for sound rather than for meaning. Since the nonsensical aspect of it is intentional it doesn't bother me. But if somebody tries to write meaningful lyrics and does a bad job of it that can ruin a song for me.
@Seraphem: You should never listen to Yes or The Mars Volta.
I was actually thinking about "Close to the Edge", but that also works. Also the keyboard solo in that song kicks ass.
EDIT: I finally finished Chapter 2. Ugh, I had writers block for like 90% of it, so any feedback would be very helpful. In particular, I really want to punch up the section where Spike deals with the machine, so any suggestions for that would be great. Dang, I haven't written an action scene in forever, and it shows.

Reaction Image RepositoryThey Might Be Giants use Word Salad Lyrics a lot. That's probably the only example I can think of. I generally prefer my lyrics to make sense, too. Not very fond of pop song lyrics in general, with some exceptions.

Gah, I hate Yes! I only mildly dislike Word Salad Lyrics, but I also don't like long songs. anything over 6 minutes and I rapidly start losing interest unless it's really freaking amazing.
and then yes goes and combines both of those things!

XP granted for befriending a giant magical spider!Heh, and Yes isn't even the worst offender, by a long shot.
Reaction Image Repository...I should listen to more Yes. That's my kind of thing.
The only song I really know and link to them isn't even by them (just borrowed Jon Anderson).
See, this is the sort of thing I'd like in my big damn pony movie.
There is no beginning. There is no end. There is only... Hooty.
!
It wouldn't happen because it would be solved very quickly, although probably not this way. My guess is, after the initial comical over-reaction, ponies will step up and show solidarity and compassion; thus, the zombies will remain the real problem and threat to survive, rather than other fellow living folks like they do in the usual Zombie Apocalypse misanthropic (mishippic?) manner. Ponies will be less willing to Shoot the Dog even when it's necessary, but they'll also be less willing to jump the gun and Kick the Dog stupidly.
I foresee an ending like the one in Shawn Of The Dead... as long as we assume slow zombies.
Regardless of whether they're fast or slow (or whether that changes between night and day), one thing to remember is that zombies rot, and no muscle means no locomotion unless you're in Warm Bodies. Melted eyes means they can't see that well, rotten ears... etc. They deteriorate. You won't find zombies walking around after three days, let alone twenty years like in The Last Of Us.
So, basically, the zombie epidemic eventually solves itself by being logistically unsustainable. The ponies' job is to solve it before that happens, preferably in a clean, life-affirming way.
