Such a shame. Would have been awesome to have Delta and Theta around full time.

Washington: Its only by doing our best, our absolute best and failing that we can ever truly know exactly how much we suck. You messed up.

We all have regrets. Lost friends we'd like to have around. Things we'd take back... but these time guns can't fix us. You use them to relieve guilt, right wrongs, to avoid responsibility.

But the past is done. Do better now, be better now. Now is the only time that's every mattered.

Ask yourself, do I make bad decisions? How can I do better? Who do I want to be? Mistakes are the dirt we grow from Tucker.

In the end, you can't argue with cause and effect. You made a mess, you need to clean it up.

Wyldchyld was right. Washington really is the heart of this show's later seasons.

... I really hope this is a joke and not what Rivas was said to be working on...

This... this has to be a joke or a troll. This can't be actual RVB. This looks more like a garbage sitcom than anything RVB. Hell, there isn't even any sign of Carolina, Wash, or Tucker. Do not let this be what RVB becomes!

If Wash is The Heart of RVB, then him not being shown should be evident enough that RVB has lost it's heart.

EDIT: Okay, apparently It's non-canon spinoff shorts, so if anything it's their version of RWBY Chibi. Lets hope to god the actual next season is better than this train wreck though.

EDIT 2: Nope, it's what Rivas seemed to be working on...

I have lost all hope.

Woooo! Excited that people will get to see some of these machinimated sitcom-inspired shorts soon, and get to know Shatter Squad a little bit.

Rivas is fighting with fire.

I don’t think this has been confirmed to be any sort of continuation, even if this is what Rivas is working on. Still, non canon is better than the alternative that is messing with continuity and development.

I really hate to say this, but... maybe it's time they put this series out to pasture. It doesn't seem like they know what to do with it now.

Meh.

Wandavision did wacky family sitcom jokes too and was pretty good. Seasons 10 through 15 and growing international interest in RWBY has a great many of us convinced that every part of this franchise/anything Rooster Teeth does is meant to be an epic sci-fi adventure with serialized storytelling.

To that, I say, go back and watch the first 5 seasons. Look at their library of works. RWBY, Red vs Blue, and Genlock are the outliers.

I'd wager there's either A) more to this than meets the eye, or B) meant to be a joke so that they can relax from trying to make the next big story arc. Or, C), somebody in the writing and animation staff lost their collective minds and somehow fused their insanity into a teaser clip.

I mean, that's not the problem though? The best parts of RT have typically been the characters and banter. Writing relatable dialogue is what gave the series its strength to begin with. It's just that Zero has none of the funny lines, wit, or anything really to latch on to and build from. Not in the space of half a season, and certainly not while trying to prioritize plot and action at the same time.

What confuses me is how much love went into the fighting. It's hardly a low effort project when it comes to animation, but all that can't make up for thin dialogue.

Like we don't need more Reds and Blues at this point, there's Chorus or Andrews plots, or any number of side characters they could use from existing staff and VA already. We didn't need brand new characters if they wanted to do a short, action-focused season.

[up]The reason the fighting was so focused on was because the director of Zero was Torrian Crawford. Torrian previously was one of the lead animators of Screwattack and did a lot of animation for DEATH BATTLE! and DBX. When Screwattack was absorbed into Rooster Teeth, Torrian became one of the leading animators of RWBY after Monty's death, and was one of the major animators working on gen:LOCK. It's actually because of Torrian that Sun was able to use his gunchuks in Volume 5.

  • For a little RWBY trivia, the reason Sun only used his Gunchuks once in the Poser volumes is because Monty only ever came up with a single rig for the animation, and ending up losing it. Since he couldn't recreate it or a new one to replace it, Sun was limited to using his bo-staff form. Torrian however was able to make a new rig when he was brought on, and had intended to use it for a DBX he'd been working on involving Sun vs. Kim Wu that has been suffering Troubled Production.

In many respects, Torrian is like Monty was: amazing animator, but shit writer. As a result, without a proper writer behind him, most of Torrian's work is all style and no substance. Case in point: he wrote the first draft of Zero in one night. He spent more time making the armor for the characters, which took two days.

Apparently, Torrian has actually left Rooster Teeth to become a previsual animator for Respawn Entertainment, the guys behind Titanfall. So I doubt he has any involvement with RvB anymore.

Still, yeah. They didn't need to create an entire new team if they wanted to retire the BGC. Chorus alone is rife for being a potential new setting with stories to tell. You could even have Wash, Carolina, and Tucker still stick around since they have reasons to join with Chorus rather than the Alliance of Defense. Namely, Tucker being the father of about half of the planets children, and Wash and Carolina being friends with Kimball.

Hell, we still have Locus out there and Chorus doesn't exactly have good feelings about him, why didn't we have a story about Chorus having to work with him to deal with a major threat. You'd only need new voices for Andersmith, Locus, and maybe Bitters, since Lindsay, Kerry, and Barb are still with RT, and Arryn still works with them.

Or why not a story of Donut travelling the galaxy and helping out where he can? Dan Godwin is still with RT even if to a lesser extent, you could have something similar to Samurai Jack: Soldier Pink.

Or, as others suggested, why not a prequel season devoted to the Mercs? The Merc Trilogy was one of the more popular parts of Season 14, and Christopher Sabat still works with RT too, so why not give us a full season showing their Protagonist Journey to Villain.

Well

  • Seasons 15 to 16 weren't perfect but they still had redeeming qualities.
  • A better alternative to this action-focused storyline would have been to make the story a "Sarge-ified drama."
  • Some of the plot lines and characters weren't that bad, but they just go nowhere.
  • Axel, West, and One are all bland. The exposition on the characters is awful and comparisons to how RVB managed to do characterization right are made. One is basically Carolina but written worse. East has "angry teen energy" that Eruption Fang defends, and also makes her the most expressive character. Raymond and West don't play off each other the way Caboose and Wash did.
  • Disel < Meta. Phase carries this season with the most inventive parts of this season. Zero is just too over the top.
  • Carolina, Wash, and Tucker were brought back and squandered. The plot hole of Tucker's sword and the Hand Wave of Wash's brain injury are notable flaws.
  • It's a shame these animators were squandered on this poorly-written season. Things aren't looking up since Torrian went to another job.

"This season was written by people who didn't immerse themselves in the show/only enjoyed its superficial elements. Zero asks you to care about the new characters because the writers made them and they like them. It asks you to ignore the bad writing and not focus so much on it, and yet they tried to pull off a story with character development. The characters are boring, the plot is dumb, and the action is hampered by how it was implemented while the comedy was almost non-existent. Action is good but it doesn't make the story. It was a fine idea to break away from the main characters but it failed to make it feel like it was even the same show."

All reasonable arguments. Shame they had to come out of that asshole's mouth. Then again, "even a broken clock is right twice a day".

But still, of course East and Phase are his favs of the bunch. I recall how he's said before that South was his fav and even went and made a video pretty much defending her. He really seems to like the angsty jerk characters. Explains why he leather pants'd Adam.

The plot thickens. While looking at any new edits done to the Trivia page, I came across some interesting information in regards to Zero.

Allegedly, if Torrian is to be believed, Season 18 was supposed to have had the entirety of the original cast involved as main characters still alongside the new leads, until Executive Meddling forced the plans to change.

Now, I'm hesitant to actually believe the validity of this due to one factor: the responses Torrian and Fiona have given to criticisms of Zero. The two have demonstrated to be ardent defenders of Zero, with both making tweets that amount to "Don't Like, Don't Watch". Fiona in particular has gone on record saying just because the old fans don't like it doesn't mean it's "bad", and that the "newbies" still want more, and Torrian called the fans who disliked Zero "toxic as shit" and to "stop watching the fuckin show".

Now, to be fair to Torrian, he has allegedly been sent death threats over Zero, which isn't cool, and has no fond memories of working on it anymore, the implication that part of the reason he left Rooster Teeth was a result of the backlash. But the response he has to the fandom isn't good either. It's a blanket statement basically accusing all of the old guard as being toxic for not liking his season, unintentionally making it look like he Can't Take Criticism.

Not helping matters is that Torrian is the only source on any of this, and the tweet he sent out doesn't exactly cast him in a good light either. He claims his crew were the only ones who wanted to work on RvB, something already kind of hard to believe considering how many members of RT still love the show, and that RT wanted him to head Season 19, but he declined. However, he immediately paints himself in a negative light by saying he takes criticism from his peers, begins disparaging RT, and for all he claims to be a "chill and humble guy" who "takes responsibility for it because I'm a professional and that's what a leader does", he still admits to, in his own words, being "petty enough to respond to ["Your shit take or opinion"] while waiting on an oil change".

Now, I don't begrudge him for being upset with the backlash and death threats, since if he is telling the truth and is suffering depression, then that shit is hard to handle. I do however think he handled said backlash immaturely, and that for all he claims to take responsibility, he's ultimately blaming the fans as a collective for the backlash, and RT for meddling with the pitch.

Even if the Executive Meddling situation is true, it doesn't change the fact that Torrian Crawford and Fiona Nova handled the backlash poorly and immaturely, and that the final product is still something they created and not everyone has to like it. They can't one minute claim to defend it and then the next place all the blame on others. It's a show, people will criticize it, and it's not just veteran fans not liking the different direction as if they were Genwunners.

Well, it's unfortunately true that the RT fandom is highly toxic.

Regarding this situation, RT released a formal statement on the 6th August warning the fandom to stop sending death threats and harassment.

As a result, I would treat this situation the same way we're handling Shane's RWBY letter — don't trope it; apply ROCEJ.
