Meanwhile, I've been watching a lot of level trivia and analysis videos about the game. There's so much to it! This one's about the least likely Emerald/Shard/Key to spawn. And where else would it be but Mad Space? The game accidentally messed up reversing the spelling, too.

[up][up] Thanks for sharing, that was very cool.

I always wondered how deep the Emerald randomness goes, what kinds of rules it has.

Okay, but then I went and binge watched all his SA 2 Speedrun histories and damn, they're good. Easily on par with the quality of Summoning Salt. Now I'm sad there's not even more from him! smile

I actually had "Sonic's Schoolhouse" for PC back in the '90s.

It was...quite a game, I guess.

Wasn't that the first time Sonic was fully voice acted (not counting the "I'm out of here" from Sonic CD)?

[down]That is... not what I was expecting as a voice for sonic. It would be a good fit for knuckles, but Sonic?

I sort of find the voice from Schoolhouse to fit, if you imagine it as a young sonic who has recently learnt to talk (having been originally mute). I can imagine it transforming into the other voice actors' voices for the character. The one below isn't a very good fit in my opinion, but maybe that's just because it's so different to what I'm used to. Still very cool find.

In English at least, this prototype rom in March 1993 predates CD by 6 months.

The true voice of Sonic. All later ones are pale imitations.

Alternatively, if you go back even further, there's also the 1991 Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car. IIRC, the Japanese version of Cosmo Fighter uses the same voice.

[up][up]I think Sega recognized they had a hit on their hands, and they wanted to shove the character into everything they could.

Heck, Sonic's origin story is that he was created in a mascot design contest that Sega held, and he was simply inserted into Yuji Naka's game idea, replacing his original rabbit character.

Mario similarly had weird early games. Look at Donkey Kong, where he originated from! He also had a Game and Watch game that seems to take place in something like the Vietnam War!

[up][up]Hell, Mario was originally Popeye!

Mario in the Vietnam War is strange. But, to be fair, so is Tails assassinating (well not exactly but still) JFK and references to the Holocaust.

Part of me considers getting Sonic Frontiers again when I get a PS5 next year as that is the only Sonic game with an easy Platinum (thereby giving me two Plats)...the other part doesn't want to go through Chaos Island's pinball machine again.

I just finished reading my copy of Volume 4 of the IDW comic. Some thoughts:

  • Last year I was speculating who would be on the cover, and reasons why it might be Amy, given her anniversary and prominence in these years and in some of the stories it would cover. But having read it, it makes a lot of sense that they went with Eggman, given not only his own prominence but the prominence of villains throughout all of the stories, including every major villain (except for Metal Sonic) that the comics had up to that point.
  • The comic gets across very well how Eggman is very much both parts of the term "evil genius," which sometimes gets lost in the light humor of the games.
  • Wat what point did characters just start calling Metal Sonic "Metal"?
  • I love the facial expressions in the comics, but I can't help but notice that Sonic doesn't even show surprise on the level of other characters.
  • At least in the comics, Orbot have some competence when Eggman isn't able to be omni-present. Mostly in following orders, but he can also keep things going as they are decently. In Frontiers, Eggman wonders where he went wrong with Orbot and Cubot. I think the issue, besides them not actually being evil, is that they're not particularly independent or creative. They're loyal, but they're also only a couple steps above drones.
  • On that note, Zavok and Starline had a debate on the values of living teammates vs machine workers. Starline preferred machines for loyalty and control reasons, while Zavok preferred organic, living teammates for the ability to grow and exceed limits.

Sonic started referring to Metal Sonic in the main continuity roughly since 2010 with Free Riders, by that point the dialogue was a bit more casual so they were allowed to refer to Metal Sonic as just "Metal". This nickname, likewise, was due to the OVA calling Metal Sonic just "Metal".

I've been playing a lot of Sonic lately. Sonic Origins (even though I got the Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Adventure DX with all the Game Gear games, and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection), Team Sonic Racing, and Sonic World, but I can't get past Stage 4 getting the Chaos Emeralds. I hate those holes on the track...

As for TSR, I hate how they replaced Cream with the chao. I mean I LIKE chao, but having four of them in a car is just kinda weird. I'd be fine with just Cheese.

And the DLC for Sonic Frontiers was too hard so I just set the difficulty to easy.

I just want to win, you know?

From what I saw (having only just now played the Frontiers dlc myself) is that people were talking on Twitter about the base game being too easy, and Sega went "Oh, you want harder? WE'LL GIVE YOU HARDER". Apparently there was a patch in December that fixed/eased up on some things, so I guess they agreed that they went too far.

Easy mode made it a lot better. More jump rings, more time to beat challenges...

The final boss was still difficult and beating it was unintuitive; it had too many phases and I couldn't have guessed that you had to cut the cord connecting it to The End so it'd stop healing.

Though I liked the original ending better where The End would taunt you and gameplay was like Ikaruga.

Again, my issue isn't the difficulty, just the lack of checkpoints. In the base game's towers, there were certain points where if you got there, they would also activate pulleys to get to those same spots from the start, so that if you just made one mistake you didn't have to do the whole thing again. Even some of the Find the Lost Chao Koco missions in the DLC had ways to jump in from the middle (or right at the end, in the case of one on Ares). Even the infamous tower on Kronos made it so that as long as you didn't die, you didn't have to do the whole thing over again.

Even if there was just one checkpoint at the 75% done mark, it would've made a difference.

For the people who noted Cream's gap in playability, there was also one panel (issue 33, page 3, or page 97 of volume 4) of the comic set in Vanilla's house, with a decorative wall sign directly above Cream that said "long time no see." Considering she was just in the last arc that had the heroes in it (the Metal Virus), maybe it was referring to game appearances.

In any case, she and Rouge are back for Dream Team, even if it's sadly Apple Arcade exclusive.
