[up] Meanwhile, on the moon, two astronauts have the following conversation:

  • Astronaut 1: (*reads the Deadline article*) Wait, big movies aren't back?
  • Astronaut 2: (*points a gun behind the first astronaut*) Never were.

Today I learned about a fan-made Bee Movie musical made mainly for the memes. And the music is really good!

"‘Ya Like Jazz? A Bee Musical’ is a passion project by college-age meme lovers and theatre lovers. What started off as a joke turned into a full length musical parody about one of the strangest animated movies of our generation."

It's nice how they include ACTUAL bee facts too XD

As part of the fun on New Year's Eve, I watched one of my Christmas presents, one of my favorite movies that I haven't seen for a long time: The Road to El Dorado. :)

I like to keep my audience riveted.

Well, looks like Dream Works Classics' acquisition of Felix the Cat might actually have a concrete future.

Growing media studio Superstario, led by Mike Federall, is planning to release a brand new comic book series for Felix with Universal (which owns Dream Works).

Felix the Cat returns with All New Adventures by writer Mike Federali and Bob Frantz with artwork by Tracy Yardley (Sonic the Hedgehog).

Felix must face the new menace XILEF who has appeared from another dimension. Felix must defeat all his classic enemies, The Professor, Roc Bottom, and Master Cylinder, or hand over his Magic Bag O' Tricks forever!

During these new challenges, Felix meets new friends that will forever change the Felix universe! The wonderful wonderful cat returns Spring 2021.

Rewatching Bee Movie again makes me realize how hilarious it is and I gained much appreciation for it.

[up][up] Wait, I thought Felix the Cat was public domain. Why would Dreamworks need to aquire the rights?

#659: Jan 18th 2021 at 10:44:11 AM

[up] Initially I thought DreamWorks just happened to have netted the rights when they acquired Classic Media, but I was mistaken. According to Variety, Don Oriolo sold the rights to DreamWorks himself.

Incidentally, I'm rather surprised we're getting a Felix comic. Crazy, right?

Yeah, Don Oriolo had control over the franchise for a while. He's notably the reason The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat became a significantly less fun show halfway through, leading to cancellation.

[up]x3 From what I'm reading, Felix the Cat is both a Public Domain Character and a Copyrighted Character at the same time. Yes, his earliest works are in the Public Domain, however his later appearances since the 50's are still Copyright protected. You can use Felix the Cat in anything you want, but the Title "Felix The Cat", and anything that's not from the Silent Era, are still copyright protected and owned by Dreamworks.

Which means that when Mickey Mouse does finally become Public Domain, you can only use his Steamboat Willie look and the rest of Mickey's catalog and appearances will still be protected by Disney...

Basically all the copyright expiration gets you is the ability to copy and distribute copies of the existing public domain cartoons. Characters that are trademarked are dicey to use beyond that. There are several Bugs Bunny cartoons that lapsed into the public domain (United Artists, the owner at the time, forgot to do some renewals in the late 1960s). However, I haven't seen any serious efforts to create new works based on them. The existing ones just show up on DVDs in the bargain bin at the grocery store.

From the Variety article describing Felix as a "fashion brand", it sounds like they're trying to make Felix like Hello Kitty.

It’s amazing how much praise the first Shrek received:

• First movie to win Best Animated Film at the Oscars

• One of the few animated movies to be nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Picture and Writing at the Oscars

• Considered one of the best films of 2001 by AFI, which also included it in the Best Animated Films list

• Eddie Murphy’s performance to this date is the only voice over performance to get a BAFTA nom

• Is one of the few animated movies in the Library of Congress. First non-Disney movie

Those aren’t light achievements.

[up][up]Nah Bee Movie is better Antz with humans.

[up]For as much cynical the movie is, it really has aspects of passion in it. Shrek's narrative is actually well developed.

Yeah, it's been that way since at least 2018, what with The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle and Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny coming out on Amazon. While Netflix is still doing Dream Works shows, there's also been other shows on different streaming services, like Madagascar: A Little Wild and The Mighty Ones on both Hulu and Peacock, and Doug Unplugs on Apple TV.

https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/archibalds-next-big-thing-is-here-tony-hale-interview-explains-difference-netflix-peacock/

Apparently, Tony Hale took part in an interview about Archibald's Next Big Thing 5 days ago. A few things he said include:

1. Despite the name change and move to Peacock, this is a continuation and not a reboot.

2. He had a good time writing the book the show is based on, particularly when he teamed up with his friends. Loy is apparently based on his daughter. The message of the book and show is about seeing the best in everything.

3. There may be some behind the scenes stuff in the future.

4. He talks a bit about being the creator and voice of the main character.

5. He brings up his role as Dr. Psycho on Harley Quinn and how, target audience aside, both characters are different, mainly in that Archibald wants to learn from his mistakes when he messes up.

6. Hd also compares to Archibald to his role as Forky in Toy Story 4. Forky is initially unsure of his purpose, unlike Archibald just wanting to help others.

7. He said that he does have some actors he wants to cast, and mentioned how he would've cast Tim Conway in the show if he was still alive. He also wants Henry Winkler to guest star on the show.

[up] That's a...curious development. Is the movie a soft reboot or an abridged retelling of Riding Free's first season for the crowd that doesn't have Netflix or...?
