Both of them really don't get the picture to me. The latter one more so, mostly because I actually have played the game that the former is in.
It's gonna be rather hard to get a good image for this because it's very personality-based.
Still need More Dakka, and it's about time to start a real WAAAAAGH.Switched it back. As I recall, the previous was chosen by an Image Pickin' but long ago so the thread is gone. It's also from before we started leaving notes.
Fight smart, not fair.Ugh... it's not even just a trope about attack magic, it has a personality attached too?
Why don't we have a trope for "uses attack magic, not defensive magic"? I thought that Black Magician Girl was supposed to be the counter part to the Staff Chick (defensive "white" magic).
Also, I discovered we have Hot Witch and Vain Sorceress, but not the major trope Sorceress (which I thought might cover the attack oriented female magic user).
Any way. Finding a picture to demonstrate the attack nature of the Black Magician Girl is easy. Finding one with tomboy personality is hard. Ugh... except it says Ice Queen is okay too... Does personality really have to be a required part of this trope? Maybe it should stay on the page as a a common element but not a required one?
Anyway, some pictures:

2◊
3◊
5◊
6◊
I don't know any of the characters, I'm just going by appearance, so don't complain if one of them isn't an actual example of the trope.

I'm dandy with Morrigan. She looks very sinister and has a clear magic form of something in her hand.
3 and 5 aren't bad.
Fight smart, not fair.I like 3. 5 is a bit misleading if you know the game.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. Dick#3 from Sackett's post is good.
Just so you know, Staff Chick is also a personality type. The don't even have to be able to use defensive magic. They could be an archer or even a black mage as long as they have a "support" personality.
For reference, this is the current image, which I think works fine.
Fate is a Dark Magical Girl, not a Black Magician Girl.
As for Staff Chick being a personality trope, that seems off too. Why are we making the personality the key when these are primarily RPG tropes. Shouldn't we be focused on making them focused on the gameplay?
That way instead of "Example X is a Staff Chick (the personality) but is an attacker instead of the normal defensive magic" We'd have "Example Y is a Staff Chick (defensive) but has a more aggressive personality then normal".
Just makes more sense to me. Easier to sort them out too. But I guess this is a topic for the Trope Repair forum instead.

Raso's is a bit too easily confused with the Staff Chick. Not dark enough looking for either of the personalities.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickYou know, Sackett's #1, Raso's posted image, and especially Raso's #2 would all make excellent pics for Instant Runes. Whose current pic is somewhat lacking, IMO.
As for this trope, Sackett's #3 works well. Definitely not going to be mistaken for Staff Chick, and she definitely hits all the other points on Black Magician Girl.
Belief or disbelief rests with you.Is the image it was changed to. Certainly better than that fan-art thing.

Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyThat is better? Why?
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. Also, the new image is just a woman standing there while the old image at least had someone using magic.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickIt just seems as if this is like the third discussion I've gone through tonight where I'll bring up a perfectly viable image, and no one will speak anything of it.
It's obnoxious, is what it is.
Isn't Morrigan the old image?
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickLulu is a really good example.
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Yeah.
In-context, maybe. Visually, no.

She might be a good example, but that's not a good image.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickOh. Anyway. Not a great image, and as others have said, not real indicative.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyShe looks evilish. She's clearly casting some sort of spell.

From a female mage in the middle of casting◊ to a random goth girl◊.
(Yes, I know who random goth girl is. No, that doesn't stop her from being Just A Face And Etc)
Could we change it back? I'm pretty sure the previous picture was selected here.
