[up]Not true. The Xenomorph queen lays eggs which hatch into creatures that incubate themselves in other lifeforms as part of their metamorphosis into adult forms.

I mean, if you want to get technical, the idea that an egg layer is a queen is purely semantic (and isn't great because it gives the impression that the egg layer of a eusocial colony is some sort of authority within it, when there isn't strictly a hierarchy as humans would understand it).

Some eusocial insects have more than two sexes in the first place.

Yeah, being a "queen" of a eusocial insect colony just means you're just the one getting knocked up and shitting out eggs all day. Alas, no actual authority comes with it.

A "king" of a eusocial insect colony, like the King Kihunter, would presumably just be rooted in place and have a harem of egg-laying female drones around it farming its sperm. Depending on how Kihunter fertility evolved that may be more advantageous than a queen.

[up][up] I mean, that's why "technically". Perhaps the Predalien from the horrible Alien Vs Predator second movie counts.

Still, eusocial kings are rare. Hymenopterans have drones (HAPLOID drones, born of unfertilized eggs and with unpaired chromosomes), and future queens just get their lifetime supply of sperm before starting a colony. Termites do have kings, as in fully grown males that mate with the queen (termites have nymphs rather than larvae, and thus use the diferent nymphal instars as different castes, rather than having chemically castrated adult females as workers).

All in all, eggs take more space, time and resources than sperm, and if you want to have a giant worker-making factory in an eusocial colony, you want an egg layer.

[up]Though I find the Mother Brain change to be quite interesting and did like Samus having additional friends, I have to admit, I'm not too keen on making Ridley a more serious Pirate commander or even spare Samus in an act of Cruel Mercy.

Part of the appeal to me was the fact that Ridley is unlike most Nintendo villains. He's not your usual villainous ruler seeking to take over the word, he's a sadistic bastard who's only looking for excuses to kill and maim victims. A Complete Monster who haunts you in your nightmares. And the primary reason he wants to kill Samus because she survived his raid as a child and thus her existence is a stain on his reputation. I don't see Ridley sparing anyone for that long (more likely he'll force Samus to watch her colony burn and then kill her if animatic situation happened in the manga).

Been trying to learn a few Sequence Breaking tricks in Super Metroid... I'd very much like to learn how to reach the Wrecked Ship without doing Eastern Norfair first, but the Horizontal Bomb Jump is tricky to learn... So far, with liberal use of savestates, I've managed to pull it off a grand total of three times (this thing is hard on the fingers, whether you're on keyboard or gamepad). And a few minutes later, my emulator crashed. ><

I could never get the hang of the mockball.

I do liberally exploit wall jumps to get the Spazer, Varia Suit, Speed Booster, and Wave Beam early though.

In addition to the "classics" considered "in-logic" by the crossover randomizer (wall-jump without tricky overhang, single-bomb Infinite Bomb Jump, shinesparks without short-charge), I do manage a couple "real" tricks sometimes:

  • Including the mockball, but I am bad and unreliable at it.
  • At some point I managed to do the lone missile in Green Maridia with a short-charge (the simplest type thereof) instead of charging the shinespark in the next room; I no longer do, something must be off with my timing. Good news is, I now manage to do the "charge from the next room" way (which is the one the devs intended)
  • On occasion I bungled into a situation where I need a Gravity Jump to escape, and have managed so.
That's pretty much all tricks I can do. No hell-runs, no quick-kills on bosses (Phantoon in particular is a pain in the backside, and the crossover randomizer loves forcing you to fight it with less gear than in the normal game), no Continuous Wall Jump (the other way to cross the gap for which I'm learning Horizontal Bomb Jump), no going out of bounds with the X-Ray Scope, no suitless Maridia...

This game is extremely rich in technique, and I'm barely scratching the surface because I don't have that kind of skill.

Edit: I managed to put this in practice in a game where I beat Phantoon first. Nearly killed me (had 5 E-tanks and 1 reserve, 95-ish missiles, and the Spazer, and I was beeping at the end of the fight) but in the end I didn't need to use the savestate I had set once inside the ship (didn't want to do that bombjump again if I died)

I could never get the hang of truly breaking super metroid myself, for some reason, besides things like the short spark and occasionally forcing some tricks for some sections. It never quite reached the point of "look, doing this the proper way is boring so I'm just gonna exploit through this room because it'easier and funner" metroid prime 1 and 2 have reached for me.

Not to shamelessly plug my twitch channel (which can be found here)...but I'm gonna be streaming Metroid Prime in a Zero Suit Samus cosplay on Mondays and Wednesdays for the next few weeks, if anyone's interested (from 18:00 UST).

The first stream's already up on Youtube:

[up]I have a request. When you get to the Pirate Labs in Phendrana Drifts, get some good footage of the Shadow Pirates in that well-lit room near the entrance, but with the Thermal Visor off. There is very little footage online of what the Shadow Pirates look like with their cloaks active in the visible light spectrum.

IIRC Shadow Pirates are basically translucent, and you cannot lock on to them without switching visors. They also have those glowing yellow eyes with particle effects.
