YMMV / Wish Dragon

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: When Long grants Pockets' wish, Pockets gets a hand with the Midas Touch permanently turned on, which of course ends up screwing Pockets over. Since we don't know the wish's exact wording, there's an argument to be made that this was an intentional bit of Jackass Genie on Long's part, specifically in the hopes that it would backfire on Pockets and save Din.
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Din's claim of a three-week-long traffic jam has some truth to it. In the middle of the year 2010, China's G110 highway became heavily congested and suffered a series of jams, with the biggest one keeping people trapped for 10 days straight.
  • Awesome Art: The movie's art-style has been highly praised.
  • Catharsis Factor: In the prologue, while young Din waits for his mother who is late to pick him up from school, another kid mocks "Your mom forgot about you, because she doesn't (love you)." The kid's own mother cuts off his statement and scolds him for his mean remark. Unfortunately, the kid didn't learn his lesson and mocks Din behind his mother's back. ...which is promptly fixed when Li-Na throws a dumpling at him.
  • Crossover Ship: There are several fans who ship Long with Sisu, another dragon from a 2021 animated film.
  • LGBT Fanbase: The movie has developed a small LGBT following thanks to Din being seen as ace/aromantic. It helps that he sincerely regards Li-Na as just a friend rather than a potential love interest and holds The Power of Friendship in high regard.
  • Older Than They Think: When the plot was released, many were quick to call the movie Aladdin in Shanghai with a Chinese cast. Ironically, the story and titular character were originally set in China.
  • Popular with Furries: Long has been getting this treatment from the furry community ever since the film came out.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: The film does have some character and narrative beats that are clearly an homage to Aladdin but it also has significant story differences like Din coming clean to Li-Na immediately about his "prince" persona or the "genie" being the one to have the major character development arc in this story. However, many focus just on the similarities and dismiss it a copy of the Disney film.
