YMMV / Turbo Overkill

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: Some criticism has been levied against the Vector-4 section for stretching the climax of the game a bit too much, as it goes on for two hours through three separate areas and is capped off by the absolute Marathon Boss that is Maw. And there's still one more level and boss to take care of after that!
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Running into the haunted Splice machine in Sunset Synthetica that turns into a Mechanical Abomination? Absolutely horrifying. Listening to it repeatedly swear and scream at you to shove your arm into it while still maintaining that high-pitched voice? Absolutely hysterical.
  • It's Easy, So It Sucks!: One very minor criticism against the game. The chainsaw slide can one hit kill or severely damage most enemies without cooldown, there's plenty of room to move around, no fall damage, and the lock on secondary fire of Magnum is severely devastating. There's not even a scoring system apart from collectibles and percentage of enemy killed. It didn't also help that the first out of Early Access version shipped with a bug that didn't change the actual difficulty if you replay completed missions in a harder difficulty, making players think that the harder difficulties are easier.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Once you dive deep into Syn's controlled servers, you see a lot of Body Horror, Meat Moss, and screens full of pictures of screaming.
    • Syn's minions, which comprise of the enemies you fight, are not a pleasant sight to the eye. Thank yourself for being able to move and kill fast to end their misery.
    • Episode 2. Syn is successful taking over the world's networked computers. There's also gorier scenes such as bungee jumping with an enemy soldier's entrails, ripping out an implant from a bounty hunter's brain, and having Johnny's hand punched a hole in order to install the grappling hook ability.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • S.A.M.M.'s reaction to Syn taking over Paradise City and nearly corrupting him at the end of Episode 1. He somberly expresses that he feels fear for the first time, which even he didn't know was possible.
    • As you play through "Infestation," you'll hear dozens of different audio logs from the soldiers desperately trying to defend themselves from Maw's forces and screaming they don't want to die. None of them survive. The very last log depicts a soldier softly mumbling that everyone else is dead, before he turns the gun on himself.
    They're dead...they're all dead... (Gunshot)
  • That One Boss: Maw in Napalm Blitz. You have to fight him not one, not two, but four times in a row without dying. The first two phases, in particular, are an absolute nightmare.
    • His first phase consists of you constantly chasing after Maw as he uses his grapple hook to swing around the arena, at which point he'll fire various long-ranged attacks at you. His laser wall attack, which you only have a split second to dodge, can easily chew through all your armor if you're not paying attention. Not helping matters is that even if you get close to him, he'll use his electric ground pound attack, which can also chew through your health almost instantly. Also, there's a grinder in the center of the arena you can fall into if you don't watch your step.
    • The second phase has Maw doing the inverse. Instead of running away, he will grapple himself towards you and get up in your face, thereby making it much easier to use devastating attacks at close range—including the aforementioned ground attack. He also gains the ability to use heat-seeking rockets which, while not as deadly as his primary attacks, can catch you off-guard if you're trying to put distance between him and yourself.
