YMMV / Totally Not Mark

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: When his channel was scoured of its Dragon Ball and One Piece videos by Toei in late 2021, Japanese viewers of the channel showed little to no sympathy towards him, feeling as though Toei had every right to remove the videos and that Mark bringing the news up was childish. This was in sharp contrast to many Western fans who felt Toei had crossed a line and abused their power by removing all his years of hard work. The divide was so bad that Mark is now blocked on Japanese YouTube over the issue.
  • Awesome Moments: The full 3-and-a-half-hour review of Berserk has, at 2:46:24, a motion comic sequence depicting Guts and Zodd teaming up to take down Emperor Ganishka's astral form. All to the tune of "Sign". It's the closest thing we'll possibly ever get to an animated adaptation of this scene, and it is amazing.
    • At the start of "Redrawing Dragon Ball Super's New Movie (Super Hero) - 3D vs 2D - PART 2" he announced that he somehow managed to get into contact with multiple professional animators who have and still work at Toei Animation, asking if they'd be keen on joining in on the fun of redrawing shots from the trailers for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Three animators from across the globe eagerly got on board, and Part 3 reminds us that the creation of anime nowadays is an increasingly international effort thanks to modern digital technology, and the results of this collaboration look fantastic. And Barkarott even did an unprompted short animation of Gohan Beast, and it looks phenomenal.
    • The long-awaited review of Dragon Ball Z was well worth the wait, especially when the Buu Saga includes the mini-revival of Team Four Star's Dragon Ball Z Abridged in the form of the Buu Bits.
  • Broken Base:
    • People are split regarding Mark's opinion on Goku being a Flat Character, with him not changing much through the story but allowing others to change. Many agree with his points, citing that Goku being a character who isn't developed much but does so in others makes him a compelling character (a view that Akira Toriyama agrees on), while others disagree heavily, saying that Goku did change as a character, an example being an understated arc where Goku learns more about death as a child and how that shapes his actions. There is a third crowd that thinks Mark made a good point but hates Mark's term, as it is straightforward to imply he is stating Goku is a one-dimensional boring character, something Mark has never said and doesn’t believe but can easily be misunderstood from a casual viewer. Mark is aware of the split but has said he is proud that the video is still among his most viewed ones.
    • The constant references to the poor animation of Dragon Ball Super's Episode 5. Some still find it funny, while some others are getting sick of it to death.
  • Funny Moments: During the Piccolo Jr. Review, he had help from Team Four Star on doing the first meeting of Goku and Mr. Popo right. Popo tells Goku that he needs to undergo Mr. Popo's training first, and promptly teaches him the Pecking Order via punching him out of the Lookout.
    • When talking about the pilot chapter of Berserk in his review of The Lost Children arc, he completely halts the review to rant on how Guts says "I could care less" instead of the correct "I couldn't care less".
  • He Panned It, Now He Sucks!: His review of the second part of Whole Cake Island has received a notable amount of criticism in the comments for pointing out what his problems with the arc were, despite him saying that the arc ranks high on his personal list of favorites.
  • Heartwarming Moments: After Mark received over 150 manual takedowns of his Dragon Ball and One Piece videos by Toei Animation (actually as a result of automation by YouTube copyright bots), content creators from all over threw their support towards Mark, spreading the word of what happened.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: The second half of his review of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind immediately came under criticism for this, as half of the video is instead focused on a tier list for each JoJo protagonist and openings. Viewers felt this came at the expense of an in-depth review of Part 5's second half and it shows with Mark pretty much glossing over many of the fights and the thematic significance of the parts.
  • Tearjerker: The entire debacle with Toei Animation (and possibly, the YT copyright bots) and its impact on not only Mark's content but his livelihood and health.
