YMMV / The Wacky World of Tex Avery

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The show attempted to hit the renewed interest in classic animation by doing a show dedicated to and named after Tex Avery, one of the medium's biggest early innovators. Unfortunately, it backfired, because doing a show named after a man who had been dead for seventeen years couldn't help but look like a ghoulish attempt to piggyback off his legacy, and immediately placed it in comparison with all manner of classic cartoons that it bore little resemblance to. Quite tellingly, the show only really saw success in territories where Tex Avery was less known.
  • Bile Fascination: Most people only know this show as a fabled bastardization of Tex Avery's legacy and seek it out just to see if it lives up to the hype (or just stumble across it trying to find classic Avery shorts on video sharing-sites).
  • Critical Backlash: Often cited as one of the worst cartoons by most animation purists. But many have likewise noted it isn't as bad as the reception make it out to be and just middling at best, noting it only gets a bad rep because of trying to tie its namesake to a beloved animator.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Among those who actually like the show, Pompeii Pete and Genghis and Khannie are considered fan favorites.
    • Mooch the Fox is also popular in some furry circles.
    • And of course, there's Chastity Knott.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The show is only truly reviled in the United States, not helped by a number of American animation reviewers negatively covering it. However, in other countries such as Germany, Spain, Italy or its native France, it is considered a mild Cult Classic with a lot of nostalgic appeal.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • It's a popular trend on Twitter to act as though this show is a beloved Cult Classic with a massive fanbase.
    • "The X of Tex Avery" is a common Mad-Libs styled joke about the show.
    • The intro for the show became very common shitpost material in late 2019.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Most people who've actually seen the show have said that the only truly bad thing about it is how it tries to mooch off of Avery's legacy while the cartoons themselves are no better or worse than most other Saturday morning cartoons of the era.
