• Hilarious in Hindsight: Imelda Staunton wouldn't find Michael Gambon nearly as easy to control in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
• Jerkass Woobie: Oh, Philip. He's openly misanthropic, makes off-color jokes and treats most of the people around him like dirt. He's also suffering a condition that leaves him paralyzed and in constant pain, and his misanthropy stems largely from his self-hatred. Whenever he cries, you'll be hard pressed not to cry with him.
• Retroactive Recognition: David Thewlis is the second soldier.
• Tear Jerker: After Mrs. Marlow has died, Philip comes back home with his dad but as they're walking through the forest, Philip runs off to be by himself. His dad looks for him and when he can't find him, he stops and gives an absolutely heart-rending wail of despair. Philip has been spying on him, and when Mr. Marlow starts walking back, Philip runs out and takes his hand and they walk home together. The moment is sold by the amazing performance of Jim Carter as Mr. Marlow.
