YMMV / The Simpsons S5 E12 "Bart Gets Famous"

Go To

  • Canon Discontinuity: All subsequent episodes have ignored the scene in this episode that suggests Bumblebee Man isn't really Mexican. When it was brought up to one of the writers on a commentary for a later episode, he said, "I didn't like that joke."
  • Hilarious in Hindsight
    • Bart earns his 15 Minutes of Fame after embarrassing himself on live TV, with the one-liner "I didn't do it" becoming a Memetic Mutation that even got turned into a hit novelty rap song. Fast-forward to 2016, and a teenage girl named Danielle Bregoli becomes famous after embarrassing herself on Dr. Phil, with the one-liner "catch me outside, how 'bout dah!?" becoming a Memetic Mutation that even got turned into a hit novelty rap song.
    • Speaking of the rap song tie-in called "I Didn't Do It," six years after this episode aired, Shaggy would have a hit single with a song of a similar title, which itself became a meme.
    • Kitty Carlisle being a head in a jar in Bart's future vision.
  • Memetic Mutation: The scene where Bart's in class and all the kids and Mrs. Krabappel are staring at him smiling. Milhouse tells him to "say the line" and Bart reluctantly sighs and says "I didn't do it." and the class cheers while Bart looks miserable. This scene is often edited on forums and social media to make fun of other discredited memes.
  • Signature Scene: "Say the line, Bart!". Prior to the memes, it was probably Bart appearing on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
  • Unintentional Period Piece:
    • Bart taking a cell phone call during class while working as Krusty's assistant. Back then, the joke was that only important people had cell phones (and that cell phones in the 1990s were big and unwieldy). These days, with smaller cell phones and kids as young as ten having them (due to their parents trying to make sure where they are at all times or the kids themselves wanting to be hip and cool), the joke isn't all that funny or revolutionary, and comes off as odd that a ten-year-old would have such a big cell phone.
    • Bart's Imagine Spot where he's a contestant on Match Game alongside Kitty Carlisle and Farrah Fawcett in the year 2034. For one thing, Carlisle and Fawcett died in 2007 and 2009, respectively. For another, Match Game was cancelled in 2021.
