YMMV / The Simpsons S3 E14 "Lisa the Greek"

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: At the beginning of this episode, Marge warns Homer that all that junk food can't be good for his heart, which then cuts to a shot of one of Homer's arteries grossly inflating, narrowly avoiding a heart attack. One season later in "Homer's Triple Bypass", all of this would catch up to him and he would end up actually having not one, but several heart attacks.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: This episode correctly predicted that Washington would win the Super Bowl a few days later. Amusingly, Buffalo actually never led once in the real-life game, as they were on the receiving end of a Curb-Stomp Battle instead.
  • Older Than They Think: While the "HomerĀ³" segment of "Treehouse of Horror VI" is typically remembered as the show's first episode to use 3D computer animation, the opening shot of this episode was in fact the show's first actual use of such animation (albeit with the 3D animation being fully traced over using conventional animation; it wasn't until well over a decade later that the technology advanced to the point where they either didn't need to do this, or only needed to do it for some elements in a scene).
  • One-Scene Wonder: "Smooth" Jimmy Apollo.
  • Unintentional Period Piece:
    • The episode features a fairly amateur (by today's standards) half-time show, while Troy McClure announces he's going to appear in a new show that will premiere after the game. Both staples would be gone in a few years, being respectively replaced by lavish spectacles headlined by pop artists and football-themed episodes of hit shows.
    • This episode was clearly dated to the early 90's, as the first Joe Gibbs era was coming to an end for Washington. In the decades since the episode aired, the franchise has entered a major Audience-Alienating Era that they are still in as of this writing. Furthermore, they were still known as the Washington Redskins at the time, and it took until The New '20s before they would undergo a name change, now rebranded as the Washington Commanders.
    • This episode also shows sports gambling as a secretive and shady practice. Today, not only have many states legalized sports gambling, there are also multiple websites that allow betting on sports. If the episode was made today, Homer would probably just place his bets online.
