YMMV / The Gaslight Anthem

Go To

  • Broken Base:
    • Brian Fallon's solo albums, especially Sleepwalkers. Painkillers was welcomed warmly, though not as universally acclaimed as The Gaslight Anthem. Sleepwalkers on the other hand received a lot more mixed reception. Some consider it to be among Brian's best work, while others find it too safe and uninspiring. Local Honey is even more polarizing than the first two albums due to its sounding much different from The Gaslight Anthem.
    • Also, Get Hurt and the events that lead to the band's hiatus have polarized the fanbase. Notably, some have criticized Brian's decision to call it quits on The Gaslight Anthem as an over-reaction to Get Hurt's polarized reception and believe the group had a lot more to offer as a band.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • With Bruce Springsteen fans, as Bruce is one of the biggest influences on the band, especially frontman Brian Fallon.
    • With a number of fellow indie and punk bands. Some bands are influences on Gaslight, some are artists that Gaslight has opened for, while others are peers who have shared influences (i.e. Springsteen, Heartland Rock), or are even from the same region (the Northeast US): Hot Water Music, Against Me!, The Menzingers, The Killers, Titus Andronicus, The Bouncing Souls, The Hold Steady, and more.
  • Never Live It Down: One of the most common topics associated with the band is their association and influence from Bruce Springsteen as fellow New Jersey artists. For a period of time, this comparison followed them everywhere into many different interviews. Made more frustrating by the fact that of the band members, only Brian Fallon was a big fan while the others incorporated many different influences.
  • Sequel Displacement: It's easy to forget that the band had one album prior to The '59 Sound in the form of Sink or Swim. Whereas Sink or Swim was appreciated in punk circles, The '59 Sound propelled them to mainstream attention. It's also the album that established their predominant persona.
  • Signature Song: "The 59 Sound", the title track to their most well-known album. In terms of popularity, "45" is the band's biggest hit.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: Zigzagged. The band has received both praise and criticism for their influence from Bruce Springsteen, who is admittedly one of many influences. One particularly scathing review accused the band of only being defined in relation to Springsteen.
