YMMV / The Croods: A New Age

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
    • The music opens to "I Think I Love You" by The Partridge Family, a song used as a theme for Guy and Eep's relationship.
    • The closing credits feature a cover of the song is sung... by Tenacious D.
    • The Thunder Sisters anthem, heard here is an anthem of power and badass action.
  • Contested Sequel: Some people will say they like the sequel better than the original. Plus, it has a 77% "Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes with eight more reviews than the 72% "Fresh" first film did. On the other hand, others found the first movie to be stronger, with better writing, action and emotional moments overall. The sequel also had a lower budget than the first film, meaning that while the animation is still beautiful, it's not quite on par with how gorgeous the animation of the original was.
  • Ho Yay: Phil and Grug's declaration of bromance near the end is... intense, to say the least, particularly when Grug holds Phil in a Bridal Carry while "True" plays full-blast.
  • Les Yay: While Eep's relationship with Guy is still the film's primary romance, Eep spends a significant chunk of the film becoming attached to Dawn. Regardless, they have a pretty nice friendship free from the typical love rivalry you would expect.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "THUNDA SISTAS!"
    • "I'm hungry!" "IN A MINUTE!!!!" Explanation
  • Moe: Dawn, who has an adorable design and a charming naïveté and excitement for the world outside her home.
  • One True Threesome: While the film's official ship is between Guy and Eep, the Les Yay happening with Eep and Dawn, combined with Phil and Hope trying to push Dawn and Guy together (though with both kids not wanting to be together), has resulted in a lot of fans shipping the three together as a polyamorous trio.
  • Spiritual Successor: The climax of the film involves humans and their former animal enemies (the Punch-Monkeys) working together to fight a massive apex predator that has enslaved the animals to gather food for it from their human neighbors or be eaten themselves, with the use of fire and dropping the monster to its doom. This is similar to How to Train Your Dragon, another Chris Sanders-affiliated Dreamworks Animated movie.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Although it wasn’t seen as an awful film, the original Croods was dismissed as a generic and forgettable road-trip film by most DreamWorks fans, and it wasn't long till it got swept under the rug. The sequel, by contrast, is seen as a massive improvement over the first film in many regards, especially its story and humor.
  • Trailer Joke Decay: The lines "Whoa, peanut toe!" and "Never apologize for an effective kill circle" have been repeated endlessly in trailers and ads for the movie.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: While the significantly lower budget means the film doesn't appear quite as spectacular as its predecessor (and is presumably why some of the family's pets don't return), it still looks gorgeous, with similarly brightly colored and innovative designs. The Bettermans' oasis looks just as inviting and marvelous as the Croods perceive it to be.
