YMMV / Strays (2023)

  • Catharsis Factor: Doug finally getting his dick ripped off by Reggie for all the cruelty he has brought onto him over the years, especially for animal lovers.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the Japanese dub, Toshiyuki Morikawa's role as Doug is quite hilarious and also ironic considering he previously worked in Legend of the Blue Wolves, a yaoi anime OVA, as Leonard Schteinberg. The hilarity came with the fact that, in that OVA, Leonard castrates Captain Continental, the main villain, in revenge for raping Jonathan, his lover, while in this film, he is the one who gets castrated, or more accuratelly, getting his dick ripped off by the hero, in a inversion from what happened in the OVA.
  • Love to Hate: Doug is perhaps one of the most repulsive characters in any media with his horrendous abuse of his dog, Reggie. Nevertheless, Will Forte's performance makes him very entertaining to watch, while at the same time making it easy to root for his ultimate comeuppance as well.
  • Moral Event Horizon: In case you had any sympathy for Doug throughout the movie, he snaps and attempts to beat Reggie to death with a baseball bat when he finally returns home in the climax, right as he is denouncing his ownership and leaving the house for good. By trying to take matters into his own hands instead of just letting the poor dog go, Doug has well deserved the ensuing humiliation and the loss of his dick.
  • So Okay, It's Average: With a 53% critics and 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.3 on IMDB it's pretty much considered average by audiences and critics across the board.
  • Squick: The dogs defecating on the floor at the pound. And one of the workers slipping and falling into it, causing him to be covered in feces.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: Movies about talking dogs have long been associated with family entertainment, but the swearing, Mushroom Samba jokes, and the lead dog openly vowing to bite his abusive owner's dick off in the trailer make it clear this isn't for kids. To drive the point home further, the first two domestic posters proudly display its R rating in a similar manner to Sausage Party. The Latin American Spanish version drive the point further by calling the film Hijos de perra (Sons of Bitches), in case the audience didn't get the memo about the content of the film. Not to mention Reggie succeeds in biting his owner's dick off in a rather gory way much like a horror movie, which placing a Strong Bloody Violence MPA descriptor would spoil.
  • The Woobie: Reggie, who was mistreated by his owner throughout most of his life no matter how loyal he is to him. All he wants is to be treated like a 'good dog'. Fortunately, he eventually gets his wish; not without giving his abusive owner what he deserves.
