YMMV / Rover Red Charlie

• Complete Monster: The brutish Hermann is a former fighting dog who amassed a brutal kill streak by biting the throats out of his opponents. In the wake of humanity's extinction, Hermann kidnaps a human child before physically and mentally breaking him into submission during a long time span. Dubbing the child "shit-boy" once he fully succumbs to Hermann's abuse, the bulldog keeps the boy enslaved and further tortured for sheer pleasure, even having him lick Hermann's rear end clean among other things. Said abuse results in the child unwittingly killing himself when Rover, Red and Charlie try to save him. Surviving his own apparent death, the vengeful Hermann tracks the trio for days before kidnapping Charlie and using him as a bait to lure his companions into a trap. With full intentions of making Rover and Charlie his new abused slaves, Hermann nearly kills Red by viciously biting off one of his legs. Despite his abusive past, Hermann admits that he liked being a fighting dog and had no qualms with doing what his owners wanted, seeking thrill in emulating the very worst of human atrocities of his own volition.
• Ensemble Dark Horse: K-9 corps dog Audie (who acts as The Remnant by guarding a tattered American flag in his military convoy) and the human cop who is either The Immune or a Token Heroic Orc before making a Heroic Sacrifice are each only in one issue but are among the best-remembered support by characters.
• Nightmare Fuel:
  • The way the human race wipes itself out deserves a mention — a Hate Plague (implied to be from space) sweeps seemingly across the entire world and causes humans to kill themselves and each other for no reason in gruesome ways while crying profusely. Naturally, some background details are pretty unnerving to spot. Highlights include a man gouging another man's eyes out while being impaled on something and many apartment occupants flinging themselves out to their deaths. Later, we see a dead man's eye being pecked out by a crow as Rover, Red and Charlie make their way through the deserted New York. There's also the fact that it all happens within a single day, presumably all over the world.
  • Charlie's feeder fares no better as he pours himself with gasoline and sets himself ablaze. And in his gibberish speech, one can make out something like "No" and "God" being spoken over repeatedly. And he doesn't even care that he is still holding Charlie by the leash as he dies, leaving the poor dog trapped and at risk of burning alive — at least, until Rover and Red spring up to save him.
  • At another point, the main trio and another dog named Albert find a crashed school bus and bring up a horrifying theory - the driver was killed by the crash instantly while the kids, too crazed to unbuckle the seat belts, all ended up starving to death.
  • Even after the humans are all gone, their "legacy" still remains in form of irradiated zones and places, something Hobby learned the hard way.
  • Everything about Hermann. A large, brutish bulldog who merrily murders anyone he finds and keeps a human boy on a leash, calling him "shit-boy" to further humiliate him. His very Establishing Character Moment sees him viciously kill chickens and makes the poor kid do the same. And that's not even speaking of the more horrific acts he does to the poor kid, some of which are (thankfully) offscreen.
  • Hermann's own backstory is no better - he was a fighting dog and suffered a lot of abuse from human owners, being forced to kill other dogs in a sick game of bets from the overseers. Worse? Hermann actually liked being the way feeders made him and enjoyed being a fighting dog, meaning he did all the consequent things (finding the human child and mind-breaking him into being his "shit-boy") out of desire to emulate his human owners.
• They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Max seems to try and make up for his jerky and cowardly behavior upon exiting the New York subway along with the main trio, which could put him on a redemption arc, but he is quickly attacked and killed by a crazed human literally a page later.
