YMMV / Resonance Days

  • Adorkable:
    • Oktavia von Seckendorff. A girl who looks like Sayaka Miki and was effectively born yesterday, she is boundlessly excitable and curious about the world she finds herself in, and is always the first to express interest in new things, and finds wonder and amazement in everything. Her innosence and friendly nature has made her companions care about her deeply, and she in turn loves them and sees them as her family.
    • Kyoko, whenever her sense of awe wins out over her cynicism, turns into a little kid fangirling over meeting aliens and seeing fantastical sights.
  • Complete Monster: Lily the Fairy is a Witch with a potent ability to brainwash anyone into becoming a perfectly loyal and obedient follower with nothing more than a week of casual conversation. Lily has used this ability to build a following over a thousand strong, and makes her living as a leecher, kidnapping the wild witches of Etherdale to drain them of soul vapors for drugs, let them heal, then drain them again in an eternal vicious cycle, making sure to keep them just hopeful enough to stay insane and not become Empty Shells. She is opposed by the Wayhouse, a humanitarian organization, and she happily turns any of its agents into her unwilling servants, making them smile while committing the most inhuman, vile crimes imagineable, and intending on turning the wayhouse into a pile of burning rubble to stop them from helping the girls she uses as livestock. When the heroes arrive at her compound, Lily subtly brainwashes them same as she has done with everyone else, making Mami and Charlotte unknowing enforcers of her evil, and convincing Kyoko and Oktavia to go against everything they believe in and hand themselves over to the void walkers.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Elsa Maria is very popular among readers, despite only being a supporting character. This mosty likely stems from her being the first friendly face Kyoko and Oktavia meet, as well as from her wiping the floor with the gang of void walkers chasing them with little difficulty.
  • Fashion-Victim Villain: Latria/Margot wears almost Victorian fashion in garish colours and a tophat. It stands a stark contrast to her master's more sterile white colour scheme.
  • Fridge Horror:
    • Have fun imagining what mess this story would be if Homura ever died, especially in a mutual kill with Madoka's witch form. Kyoko's own problems with Oktavia's loss of identity would look cute in comparison.
    • Really, any combination of the main cast dying comes with a heaping load of horrifying implications, to the point where the author claims that the Walpurgis Nights situation (where everyone in the holy quintet plus Charlotte become witches) is the best possible outcome.
    • Speaking of Walpurgis, Madoka not just turning into a Witch, but fusing into a stronger one by merging with Homulilly, is actually quite terrifying. The exact placement of the timeline of Madoka's dream in episode 1, which we later see as being one where Madoka was outright called a human-extinction level Witch, is heavily debated among fans, but merging with Homulilly and having three timelines worth of herself already (the second of which wasn't forming a barrier like Oktavia did), means that this Madoka turned into something very dangerous. Just how much destruction ended up being inflicted before someone killed her?
    • Just how many of the timelines Homura reset, and thus turned the afterlife back, had Mami and the others found themselves in as happy of a place as Mami is with Charlotte? How many shades were content and peaceful until they suddenly lost it all?
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate (and Vita) appearing in Resonance Days is a bit prophetic to the two franchises crossing over in Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story where versions of the aforementioned three arrive in the Magica Record universe.
  • Les Yay:
    • Mami apparently dreamed about meeting Kyoko again through Florence Nightingale Effect. While she denies that there were any romantic feelings in the matter, Kyoko does not seem to mind the idea of it.
    • Even before she saves them from Lily, Patricia appears utterly taken with Annabelle Lee, and her asking Annabelle to stay in Etherdale seems largely motivated by wanting to be around her and get to know her better. For her part, Annabelle actually gets along with and even seems to like Patricia more than pretty much any other character in the story.
    • Through It Makes Sense in Context, Mami ends up sitting in Oktavia's lap, leaving the mermaid's face pressed into her cleavage, much to Charlotte's annoyance.
    • Oktavia ranks Charlotte as having the best butt, followed by Mami and then Kyoko. Kyoko, while annoyed at being in third place, has to agree that Charlotte and Mami look good. A few chapters later, Oktavia also lists her friends in order of how hot she thinks they are, starting with Mami, then Charlotte, and finally Kyoko.
Oktavia: Well, butts are awesome. And they're all mine!
    • In the Hot Springs Episode, Charlotte gets a bit frisky and Mami objects that they can't do it when Kyouko and Oktavia can see them. Her response is certainly interesting. While they do move out of sight, they stay in the same room, which neither Kyouko nor Oktavia seem at all bothered by.
Charlotte: Let them, maybe they'll finally realize what's fight in front of them.
    • In her Restless Dream Sequence, Kyoko dreams that she's at a speakeasy where Mami is performing as a stripper. While Dream!Elsa Maria objects that the act is unchristian, Kyoko would like to watch a bit longer.
  • Memetic Mutation: Bitches love mermaids!
  • Rainbow Lens: Many fans pick up on the similarities between the psychological and moral issues that arise from using a witch's old name and the concept of deadnaming, frequently drawing parallels in the comment sections of both Resonance Days and Walpurgis Nights. Kyoko's difficulty with accepting Oktavia as her own person, and Oktavia's discomfort with that in particular reads heavily like someone struggling to accept that someone they're close to is trans, with Oktavia's rant in chapter 24 in particular feeling vindicating for many trans people who can see themselves in her experience.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Among the criticisms the fic receives is that it is a constant struggle and misfortunate laden tale where the main cast are constantly thrown into new situations to make them miserable with little in the way of pay off to make the suffering worth it, especially as it isn't even someone that Kyoko knows who they are trying to save and have lost everything over.
  • The Woobie: The entire main characters are this by the fourth arc after Cloudbreak. They have been robbed of a peaceful and happy life by the scheming of Reibey, and have been through so much suffering and trauma that they all just want it to end, but no matter how much they need a break, they keep being thrown to new horrors and new trauma with no rest in sight. Every time they get just a moment to sit down it turns out to be temporary or false. Kyoko and Oktavia didn't even yet to enjoy that quiet and happy life for more than a few days, and were still struggling with the trauma of their arrivals in the afterlife when it was ripped away.
