YMMV / OneRepublic

Go To

  • Bizarro Episode: The "Love Runs Out" music video is extremely surreal, and its actual meaning is very obscure.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: Do not say that "Apologize" is Timbaland's song. OneRepublic's fans won't like it. Timbaland was the co-producer and he helped provide the backing vocals for the remix version, but the song belongs to OneRepublic's discography.
  • First Installment Wins: Chances are when you talk to fans about their best work, most will say Dreaming Out Loud.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: OneRepublic is very big in Germany and Austria, thanks to the usage of their songs in several German films.
  • It's Popular, Now It Sucks!: Perhaps their most popular signature song is "Counting Stars". If you look at their official YouTube channel, it has more than 3 billion views as of July 2020. Compare that number to the second and third most popular songsnote  and notice how "Counting Stars" easily dwarfs almost every other song of the band. Long-time fans were surprised at how this song became one of the most popular trends on 2013. But to some opinions, other older iconic songs like "Secrets" should've deserved that recognition too.
  • Narm: "Apologize" is a good song, and while some do have a soft spot for the remix by Timbaland, his constant "Ey, ey, ey!" backing vocals will ruin the mood and vibe of the song.
  • Memetic Mutation: "Everybody Loves Me" has been used in AMVs (animated/anime music videos) on YouTube focusing on characters who have a confident personality.
  • Signature Songs: "Apologize", "Counting Stars", and maybe "Secrets" or "Good Life" as well. If not, then those four songs are at least the signatures for their respective albums (Dreaming Out Loud, Native, and Waking Up).
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The band has suffered a few accusations of stealing tunes from other artists. For example, "Feel Again" is compared to "Dog Days are Over" by Florence + the Machine; "Love Runs Out" is compared to Kanye West's "Love Lockdown".
  • Tear Jerker: The lyrics of "Stop and Stare" hit hard for people who are Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life or are dissatisfied by their current lives, especially in the chorus part of "I think I'm moving but I go nowhere". Other parts of the song can be interpreted as a sign of depression from being unable to express this reality. The music is melodramatic on its own, but the lyrics just add to this feeling.
    • "Lose Somebody" can be interpreted as Kygo being upset about the loss of his inspiration in life Avicii.
