YMMV / Nightwing: The New Order

Go To

  • Author's Saving Throw: Shortly after its announcement, writer Kyle Higgins took to Twitter to clarify that it's not canon to the main universe, and that Nightwing will not be going around murdering superheroes. He also compares it more to Superman: Red Son rather than Secret Empire.
  • Fanfic Fuel: The reveal that Jake is Starfire's son spawned new waves of fanart and fanfics depicting a Happily Married Dick and Kory with Jake and Mar'i.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Dick/Kory shippers who were otherwise put off by the premise will at least skim through the story for romantic moments, and their fandom as a whole has almost unanimously welcomed Jake into their Dick/Kory family headcanons while ignoring everything about New Order itself.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Lex Luthor is depicted here as a charming and affable member of the resistance to the anti-Superhuman enforcers, the Crusaders. Lex has matured and become a genuine friend to Superman and has been supplying him with methods to combat the Crusaders. When he discovers that the blood of Jake Grayson can be used to return superpowers to the world, Lex helps to convince the boy to join their cause while fending off any resistance. Lex secretly plans to use Jake to not just cure a depowered Superman but also give powers to the entire world, despite the possible cost to the city. Lex genuinely believes that he can create a better world and intends to help hasten the evolution of mankind and create a better world for all.

  • Narm: The design of Mr Freeze makes him look like a bobble-head.
  • Tainted by the Preview: The original announcement featured provocative headlines that painted Dick as a militant fascist that went around killing superheroes. The actual story itself shows a more nuanced take with Grey-and-Gray Morality, showing Dick as a morally conflicted Well-Intentioned Extremist similar to the main character of Minority Report.
