YMMV / My Hero Academia: Heroes: Rising

Go To

  • Ass Pull: At the climax of the film, Midoriya gives Bakugo One for All so they can defeat Nine, with it being clearly shown that Midoriya's final attack used all the remaining power for it. After All Might arrives and tends to the two, its revealed that, despite Midoriya passing the Quirk on to Bakugo, the ability didn't transfer all the way and not only does Midoriya retain OFA, but Bakugo conveniently loses both OFA and his memories of the moment. While an epic finale, it firmly reestablished the status quo with a handwave that doesn't make sense and raises a lot of questions. It's agreed by many that had Bakugo just simply given it back to Midoriya, it would have made more sense, and Midoriya not gaining Bakugo's Quirk could easily be explained by simply how short Bakugo had the Quirk.
  • Continuity Lock-Out: A moderate case, with few examples:
    • If you're an anime-only watcher, you'll likely have no idea who Hawks is (at least if like most of people you watched the movie before last few episodes of 4th season), or who those characters in One For All are or how Deku is aware of them with the obvious exception of Nana Shimura.
    • Deku is shown using his Air Force Gloves, which hadn't been introduced in the anime yet.
    • You'll also be thrown off when Nine casually mentions how Deku has the capacity for multiple quirks before and after attempting to steal OFA.
    • And then there's the ending where Shigaraki apparently in new clothing kills Nine. It doesn't help that the arc that explains a change in Shigaraki's behavior is at the end of the 5th season. This one is even worse for anime-only fans, since the Meta Liberation Army Arc is adapted after the Endeavor Intern Arc.
  • Even Better Sequel: The movie tends to be better regarded than the first one, My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, due to involving the entirety of Class 1-A, having bigger and more emotional stakes, and having a much more epic final battle.
  • Evil Is Cool: Nine tends to be considered the best villain to come from the movies, thanks to having multiple different Quirks, an interesting ideology, and what many consider to be one of the best fights in the entire franchise.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Why aren’t Bakugo’s arms shattered to powder by the backlash of One For All? Because he’s already been getting hit with the backlash from Explosion for years. He probably has far more tolerance for concussive force than Deku began with.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The prelude features a car chase between the Pro Heroes and the League of Villains (or more accurately, their clones, thanks to Twice). Special mention goes to a brief clash between Endeavor and Dabi; they had already met in Chapter 191 after Endeavor was badly scarred following his battle against a High-End Nomu, which he has in this movie. Fast forward to Chapter 290 and shows why Dabi is so obsessed with the Number 1 Hero: He is revealed to be Enji's long-lost eldest son and Shoto's older brother, Toya Todoroki.
    • Chapter 304 of the manga reveals a dangerous secret about One For All: It gradually depletes the life force of its wielders. Only Quirkless wielders like All Might and Izuku are immune to this drawback. This means Midoriya ended up unintentionally endangering Bakugo's life by passing it on to him in the climax. Luckily for Bakugo, it turns out the ability didn't transfer all the way and not only did Midoriya retain One For All, but Bakugo conveniently lost both One For All and his memories of the moment.
    • Chimera’s comments to Shoji about his appearance being ugly, and how he must have been bullied growing up, and blamed his parents. As revealed in Chapter 371, he wears a mask because his face is scarred from being attacked by a mob for his looks after saving a child, and he doesn’t want people to see them and think he’s driven by revenge. Rather than let anger consume him, he strives to be a Hero and set an example for people to rise above hatred.
  • Inferred Holocaust: While all its inhabitants are saved, Nabu Island may never completely recover from the events of the movie. Beside the extensive damage to houses and infrastructure, there are also some forest fires happening during the initial villain attacks, extensive damage to the old castle, the destruction of the scenic waterfalls and all the surrounding area caused by Chimera in the climax, and the collapse of the caves where the fight against Slice took place. In short, the island has lost several tourist spots and even if all the funding for the immediate reconstruction effort came from the outside, their economy would still take a big hit.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Considering that this movie takes place in the middle of the series, did anyone really think that Deku was actually going to lose One For All forever?
  • Magnificent Bastard: Nine is a cold and calculating terrorist who attempts to cure his disease using a Cell Activation Quirk in order to create a strong world, targeting the island of Nabu to get the quirk off of Katsuma Shimano. A perceptive and capable leader, he cuts off access to the mainland as he has his men go and create chaos while he finds the kids. Showing himself to be capable of thinking on the spot, Nine misdirects and uses his multiple quirks to his advantage to block and get away when the situation calls for it. During the final battle, despite Class 1A's strengths, Nine easily storms through most of them with ease, and is only defeated once Deku shares One For All with Bakugo. Nine shows even in the face of death at the hands of Tomura Shigaraki to not give up in persisting his goals and still attempts to go back and fight.
  • Narm: The scene where Deku smiles just because Katsuma is safe, even though he was never in any real danger and was merely hiding, can come off as cheesy and cringy.
  • Signature Scene: Midoriya sharing One For All with Bakugo, resulting in the film's epic final battle against Nine.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Every member of Nine's crew. All of them have cool designs and unique Quirks, but they're only used as mini-bosses for the more minor members of Class 1-A. They all have interesting backstories that were teased in the marketing, but none of them are elaborated on in the movie proper. Special mention goes to Mummy, who's taken out very early in the film and doesn't even take part in the climax.
    • As for Nine himself, you'd think that with a name like his, they'd make a bigger deal out of him having nine different Quirks at the same time. Yet, he's only ever seen using six of them. While it's somewhat justified by the plot (he needed some "empty slots" to hold the two Cell Activation Quirks and One For All), he could still have started with more abilities or stolen them during the course of the film, and discarded some of them as he needed.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: All of the film's action scenes are incredibly well-animated, but the final climax with Midoriya and Bakugo both using One For All against Nine is nothing short of mesmerizing.
