YMMV / Friday Night Funkin' D-Sides

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Mighty.ZIP has been the most popular addition to version 2.5, given the way to unlock his song, his strange style of talking, and being based off Mighty The Armadillo rather than Sonic.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: Do not, under any circumstances, say that D-Sides is a Role Swap AU. While some characters do get swapped out for others, certain characters have their designs swap with others from their series, and on very rare occasions, some characters do end up having their roles in the story swapped with another (like Sonic with Knuckles or Maria with Eggman), D-Sides still has the characters being mostly as they are with the same general roles, just with new twists. The official design guide for the mod eventually had to spell this out clearly for any aspiring fanartists, noting that Creepypasta characters get a minor exception by being able to change their hosts (e.g. God Z using Mighty as an avatar instead of Lord X using Sonic.)
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • Out of all the Sonic characters to choose for Xenophanes' D-Sides counterpart, why Mighty the Armadillo? While one might just assume it's simply for an obscure choice, in Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic was planned as a playable character, but was ultimately scrapped and replaced: his replacement being, of course, Mighty, whose sprites in Chaotix are mostly edits of Sonic's original sprites.
    • In a similar vein, why choose Wario's Woods to replace Super Mario Bros for D-Sides MX and Lucas? While again, it could just be because it’s obscure, it could also be because it’s the very last first party game released for the NES, as a stark contrast to Super Mario Bros being one of it’s launch titles.
  • It Was His Sled: Given how he’s the most talked about addition to version 2.5, Mighty.ZIP isn't as much of secret as he should be. It's telling that as of the 2.6 update, his song is no longer kept a secret and is simply available in the Freeplay menu from the start, likely because of this.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "In the notepad, fates are written..." Explanation
  • Misaimed Fandom: Despite the devs making it fairly clear it’s not, quite a lot of people think D-Sides is a Role Swap AU. While this does somewhat apply to certain characters like Pico, the mod itself is not a Swap AU, and the reasoning for the designs is simply to change up what people know.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Mighty.ZIP. From his hunched over stance, to his distorted voice, to the black liquid leaking out of his eyes and mouth, and the fact that his eyes glow yellow and his mouth is constantly open FAR wider than it should be, he's an incredibly disturbing sight to behold... especially when he looks right at the screen to taunt the player. And that’s not even mentioning how he brutalized Ray, Fang, and Maria.
    • Zeus takes it further, with a much creepier unlock method behind his song that is made to threaten the player, claiming that they're playing a pirated copy of the mod and are at risk of a virus. After a few seconds, everything cuts to black, with Zeus asking what you seek, then offering to show you its world. Zeus kicks things up a notch from where Lord X set the standard, towering over Boyfriend in all of his sequentially shifting forms, his Mighty form especially having pulsating muscles in his shell and an incredibly tall head, while holding brutalized bodies of rivals to his current form in his hand as a makeshift mic. The final phase of the song returns to the darkness, with Z rapidly changing form, all while looking right at the player.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • While crossovers were announced beforehand, not many people expected a Sonic.exe take to appear, especially when the bloody blue rodent was replaced by Mighty of all characters.
    • While a D-Side version of Lord X was inevitable after Mighty.zip, absolutely no one expected Zeus to turn into Ristar, Vectorman and Alex Kidd during the "Cycles" remix.
    • While a D-Side version of Sunky was guaranteed after Mighty.zip showed up, everyone expected it would just be a D-Sides Mitee (Sunky's version of Mighty) against Boyfriend; the fans were thus surprised, as the "Milk" remix is actually against the regular D-Sides Sunky with the player playing as Eggman, with Mitee only appearing towards the end.
