YMMV / Excalibur (2019)

  • Awesome Moments: Betsy taking on King Arthur in issue #26 unarmed and dominating him purely with her psionic powers, showing him exactly why he should fear her.
Captain Britain: “You’re Arthur? King Arthur? How stupid the legends are. You’re just a man. And you’ve forgotten why you fear my kind. I don’t need this Citadel’s power to stop you. I never have. I won’t let you retake Avalon in hate. Can I make you understand? You will die first.
  • Fan Nickname: The Mutant Formerly Known As Apocalypse, thanks to the latter's new unpronounceable symbol-based name.
  • Memetic Badass: Betsy. The fact that she's become the new Captain Britain, and a true one at that by holding the Amulet of Right that turned her brother into a Superman-esque Nigh-Invulnerable Flying Brick, all while retaining her own very potent psychic powers, has many speculating just how insanely overpowered she's going to be. These people look forward to seeing Betsy kick all kinds of ass, with some expressing that they'll be disappointed if she doesn't prove to be a story breaker.
  • Mentor Ship: Between Apocalypse and Rictor. The fans had a field day with it, citing the "daddy" energy. Rictor later admits to Shatterstar that he did have feelings for the immortal mutant.
  • Strawman Has a Point: The British government quickly go against Betsy as Captain Britain, believing her to have more loyalty to Krakoa than she does to them. While the book portrays them as unreasonable and devilish, they are right to question Betsy's role as Captain Britain - she spends almost no time with them, instead sticking almost exclusively to Krakoa, and sometimes in Otherworld. The only good she's done for them is indirect at best, like helping to protect the entire world in X of Swords. Their decision to cut ties with Krakoa is supposed to be brutal, but it's completely reasonable given how little Betsy has done to help them. Later, a member of Excalibur actively steals land and gives it to Krakoa. The only thing the British Crown has done wrong here, is side with the evil Coven Akkaba, AKA the only people who are actually helping them.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: In regards to team roster. Though not too widespread, some lamented that Betsy is the only Brit on the team, the others including three Americans (a Cajun, a Southerner who isn't Cajun, and a Chinese-American), a Mexican, and an Ancient Egyptian. This despite the fact that Excalibur is a British team, and takes very British themes based on English High Fantasy and Sword and Sorcery with the team being named after the legendary Excalibur sword, protecting the Kingdom of Avalon, while fighting a magical war with beings that include faeries and dragons. Even those who don't have a real problem with it do think it's a little odd. Similarly, the lack of any classic Excalibur members (with Nightcrawler, Rachel Summers, Kitty Pride and Meggan Puceanu being absent, and Brian Braddock being replaced by a Legacy Character) is offputting to some.
  • Unexpected Character: Apocalypse, of all characters, being a member of the team caught a lot of people off-guard when the title was announced.
