YMMV / Ed Edd N Eddy S 5 E 19 Smile For The Ed

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Normally Nazz is the nice girl among the kids but despite this she still joined in on that prank on Eddy that is obviously causing him a panic attack. Did she do this because the other kids (especially Kevin) were doing it or because she was too stupid to realize what she's really doing?
  • Angst Aversion: This episode is so mean-spirited, even by the show's standards, that many fans find it nearly impossible to watch.
  • Broken Base: One of the most controversial episodes. Many hate it because Eddy gets bullied by the kids and unfairly punished over something he didn't do. To others, however, it's not completely terrible, since the Eds work together and are genuinely good friends to each other, which is pretty rare in season 5, where their friendship is questionable at best in many episodes. There's also the Bittersweet Ending which makes Eddy hopeful again instead of the usual Downer Ending with the Eds in pain.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: While many already found this episode uneasy to sit through, it has become much worse in later years with numerous cases of people dying as a result of bullying, usually from suicide. There are also plenty of school systems that not only refuse to take action but instead punish the victim over something trivial or unrelated.
  • Never Live It Down: This episode is this to the kids, as quite a few fans have a hard time forgiving them due to the events of this episode.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The cafeteria scene, especially for real-life victims of bullying.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: The abuse Eddy experiences in this episode isn't all that dissimilar from school bullying in real life, especially in the absence of professional help.
  • The Woobie: Eddy. All he wanted was a photo taken for his brother's room, and he not only gets humiliated by Kevin, but he got detention for what Kevin did (printing the ruined photo all over school), and Edd too (impersonation of the principal).
