  • Adaptation Displacement: Much, much better known than Bedtime Story (1964), the movie with David Niven, Marlon Brando and Shirley Jones which it's based on (the original movie's writers share credit on the new version with Dale Launer). (The "innocent" really is one this time, and she and the American con artist run off together, once he does a Heel–Face Turn.)
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Lawrence pretends to have a mentally challenged brother named Ruprecht. After Michael Caine's mother died in 1989, he discovered he had a half-brother named David who had been institutionalized due to severe epilepsy and brain damage.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Janet Colgate is "The Jackal", an infamous con artist who scams money out of unassuming men. Posing as a wealthy socialite tourist, once she crosses paths with con artists Lawrence and Freddy, Janet, already knowing that they're trying to swindle her of her money, feigns naivety to get the unsuspecting men to do her bidding. Leaving the country $50,000 richer, Janet is no less jovial towards Lawrence and Freddy, allowing them to partake in her latest scam after finding their prior con the most fun she's ever had.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Moira O'Hara/The Angel of Death/Myrtle Snow/Gloria Mott as the Lady from Palm Beach.
