YMMV / Dawn of the Seeker

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Frenic, Knight-Commander Martel, and Grand Cleric Callista are a trio conspiring together to overthrow the Chantry's current leadership to place themselves into power. To this end, they abducted the young girl Avexis so Frenic can take control of her to use her ability to control beasts. After Cassandra and her mentor Byron intervene and try to investigate, Frenic kills Byron and Martel begins hunting Cassandra as a fugitive, before eventually murdering the High Seeker and framing Cassandra. They then reveal their plan of using Avexis to control a horde of dragons to attack the 10-year gathering to wipe out the Chantry leadership, while endangering thousands of civilians so that Callista can use the crisis to become the next Divine. After their plan fails, Frenic kills Callista, saying he doesn't need her anymore and that his true plan all along was to allow mages to overthrow the Chantry and rule the world.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The happy ending for the heroes in this film gets a bit more painful to watch after the reveals in Dragon Age: Inquisition about what happened to them in the years since:
    • Cassandra admits when asked about the events of the film that she was essentially given all of the credit for rescuing the Divine, receiving a huge career boost while the mages involved in stopping the conspiracy were overlooked entirely.
    • Regalyan is revealed to have attended the Divine Conclave as a representative for the Rebel Mages trying to broker peace, meaning he is killed offscreen when the Conclave is destroyed at the start of the game.
    • Avexis was at some point made Tranquil after the events of the movie, and in fact is one of the Tranquil occasionally seen doing errands in Haven. The reason why she was made Tranquil is never stated. This is especially tragic considering she's shown successfully facing down demons even as a child, suggesting she wasn't at risk of demonic possession, which is the only thing Tranquility is supposed to be used for. Even worse, something so terrible happened to her while she was Tranquil that she doubts she'd be able to deal with getting her emotions back.
I might also experience feelings of discomfort over events that have occurred while I was in this state. I can survive in this fashion. If I were made whole again, I might not.
    • The Divine herself, Beatrix III, goes to develop dementia years after being saved and eventually dies from a stroke. Asunder recounts a event late in her life where she publicly panics at the mere mention of mages, a far cry from the respect she showed Regalyan.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Cassandra acts in an extremely hostile manner towards Galyan for the first part of their relationship, threatening to kill him on almost no justification just because he's a mage, something which Galyan passively accepts. While the story's intention is clearly meant to be that Cassandra learns to see past her hatred of mages due to her love for Galyan, many fans felt that the resulting romance was extremely abrupt and forced, particularly with there being no reason for Galyan to care so much about someone so eager to kill him on a whim.
