- Aluminum Christmas Trees: The crows may seem a bit too convenient, saving Jennifer at the last moment. Turns out crows can recognize faces and hold grudges.note
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Despite the player being unable to save her, Lotte is the most popular of Jennifer's friends within the fandom.
- First Installment Wins: Easily the most popular and well-regarded entry in the series. The sequels, however, are far more divisive due to their changes in gameplay and narrative.
- Narm: One of Jennifer’s deaths involving her getting choked to death by a hand in a mirror… Then after spinning around, it pushes her on the back, sending her to the floor as if she really needed that push… Not helping is that the hand disappears mid-choke then pops back in.
- Nightmare Retardant:
- The Scare Chord that plays when something scary happens can make some events over-dramatic and ridiculous.
- Some of the ways Bobby can spawn, such as falling on the keys of a piano, can be pretty silly.
- Parody Displacement: Some would associate the track "Don't Cry Jennifer" with Lumpy Touch's "Garfield Gameboy'd" due to how that track is heavily used.
- Scrappy Mechanic: The fact that the game actively punishes running, even while not being chased by Bobby, by raising the panic meter, as Jennifer's walking speed is excruciatingly slow.
- The Scrappy: Anne gets flak from fans because one of her four lines has her teasing Lotte's nervousness shortly after arriving in the mansion.
- Special Effect Failure: The bathroom in the SNES original has a fog effect that improves the atmosphere and utilizes Mode 7 well. The PS1 version changes that to a large background image that flips back and forth, not looking plausible in the slightest.
- Viewer Gender Confusion: Players sometimes confuse Lotte for a boy. Her walking sprite does depict her with a large chest, but it's easy to miss the scene where she does move at all.
