YMMV / Berserk and the Band of the Hawk

Go To

  • Annoying Video Game Helper: Try fighting Stray War Demons or really anything like a boss in Endless Abyss with Skull Knight backing you up. Just try it, we dare you. From knocking them back at the worst possible moment, forcing you to chase them down to riding right up in your grill and shoving you around, he will do his absolute damndest to bork your combos while the guy you're trying to kill swings right through him and hits you and the camera jerks in every direction should you make the mistake of locking on due to trying to keep up with the erratic movements Skelly's forcing on your target. Oh, and his horse won't shut up.
  • Catharsis Factor: For those who had been waiting for the Schedule Slip-prone manga to come to a conclusion, this game offered some therapy by letting them beat the crap out of Griffith/Femto for everything he did. Oh yeah: Casca's playable.
  • I Am Not Shazam: For some reason, the English localizers gave the game the nonsensical and ungrammatical title Berserk and the Band of the Hawk, which makes it sound as if "Berserk" is the name of a character or thing, when that is not the case. They probably did this so that the title would resembles the common Character Name and the Noun Phrase title format, never mind the fact that berserk is an adjective, not a noun. The protagonist's name is actually Guts, and he is the person who is described as "berserk" because he fights like The Berserker. He also obtains a magical suit of armor later in the story, known as the "Berserker Armor". Guts and the Band of the Hawk, or simply Berserk: The Band of the Hawk would have made more sense.
  • Memetic Mutation: As demonstrated by this poster, some fans have affectionately referred to the series as Berserk And His Friends! due to the odd translation of the title.
  • Misaimed Marketing: The preorder bonus included an alternate Fanservice skin for Casca, which was heavily promoted in the game's advertising. The problem? Said skin was Casca as she's shown standing under the waterfall, immediately after she's been raped and tortured to the point of insanity and has the mental maturity of a toddler. Suffice to say, not everyone felt sexualizing this scene was appropriate.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: According to an interview with Hisashi Koinuma, the game features 40 characters... only 8 of which are playable.note  To the dismay of fans, characters that could have been made into unique and interesting fighters — like Isidro, Farnese, Mozgus, the Skull Knight, Grunbeld, and Ganishka — are relegated to appearing as NPCs or enemy-only bosses, and no plans for DLC characters have been announced.
  • Unexpected Character: After being left out of both previous anime adaptations of the Golden Age Arc, seeing Wyald in the roster is a definite surprise. And when one takes into account how more prominent and popular characters from the manga have been passed over, the choice to make him playable is all the more strange.
