YMMV / Belated Battleships

  • Base-Breaking Character: Jersey herself. One camp likes her for being a hyper-patriotic Blithe Spirit with no filter. The other thinks those same qualities make her an immature Jerkass Manchild.
  • Broken Base:
    • Crowning's tearful reaction to Jersey trying to get frisky with Musashi and the latter's subsequent tweet about it. Some readers thought it was an appropriate or even understated response to unfaithfulness, while others thought his reaction was overblown.
    • The author's insistence that the US will get no carriers, rendered in-story by something claiming that they are not worthy, whereas the abyss has no such limitation, is something that tends to result in messiness whenever it comes up. It doesn't help that while there is allegedly a rule that sinking ships will allow the attacker to summon more while damage taken reduces the allotment, this doesn't apply fairly to both the abyss and mankind. Witness, for example, how the sinking of the million-plus ton Habakkuk never gave mankind anywhere near that amount of shipgirl summon capacity, while Bismarck and her escorts taking great damage sinking Maya and Sendai still let them summon super-battleships outmassing what the victims had.
    • Maya and Sendai's sinking: Senseless Sacrifice or not?
    • The abyssal attack on Pearl Harbor, specifically the apparent New Powers as the Plot Demands, including weather manipulation powerful enough to create icebergs in tropical Hawaii, flawless scouting of defence positions and submersible tanks, created a massive shitstorm between those readers who thought this was blatant Ass Pull and those who thought it fit within the tenuously-defined abyssal black magic.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • This post predicted San Francisco looking Japanese and all the attendant issues before it actually happened.
    • In "A weapon to surpass the DUCKY", Johnston remarks on how she doesn't expect to live long enough for a certain battleship to take issue with her imitation. When the first shipgirl fatalities of the fic hit, they were not destroyers.
    • In this post, Skywalker_T-65 declares that if he wanted to be mean, he could have abyssal Bismarck show up. Guess who does appear later.
    • After "Iowa-class Happytimes", many readers were celebrating the First Kiss between Crowning and Jersey. One eerily prescient reader, however, guessed correctly that victory was not actually at hand.
    • One reader predicted that Jersey would have dalliances with Musashi.
    • One reader accidentally said that Missouri had been sunk. It was actually Wisconsin, but he was a few chapters too early...
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In Danbooru comments for Pacific: World War II U.S. Navy Shipgirls's version of Jersey that preceded this fic by months, one user remarked that "I always had it in my head that New Jersey would be closer to Musashi than Yamato." That work's Jersey is a Lady of War. Cue this fic, which depicts Jersey as a roughhouser closer in personality if not dress to Musashi than the demure Yamato.
    • The story started with the summoning of an American Iowa-class battleship, BB-62 USS New Jersey. The first chapter was posted back in October of 2015. Fast forward to spring of 2016, and the canon Kantai Collection game would actually have a canon Iowa-class ship available for play- though this time it's Iowa, not Jersey. And then Warship Girls added Missouri and Wisconsin to their lineup.
    • In this post, the author said one of the reasons he wouldn't bring canon!Iowa in was that she was too stacked. Later on, Jersey gets a cup size upgrade as part of her remodelling.
    • In "The old British boat lends aid", Dreadnought tells Alaska the reason why she can't be pregnant is because she's never done the horizontal tango with a man. Then Gale and Washington somehow get pregnant despite both being lesbian.
      • This is even more amusing since earlier, it was stated that "Kongou has decided to be the first Shipgirl Mother." Then Washington got pregnant.
  • Hollywood Pudgy: Whenever Arizona shows up, she's described as chubby or some such synonym multiple times. Her canon design does not reflect this in any way, and if anything more closely resembles Nagato.
