  • All-Star Cast: John Mills, Ralph Richardson, Michael Caine, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Peter Sellers, etc.
  • Blooper: The film has the unfortunate distinction of containing a blooper spectacular enough to merit an entry in Stephen Pile's 1979 volume The Book of Heroic Failures. The city of Bath, with its plentiful Georgian architecture, was used to stand in for Victorian London for location shooting... but it didn't occur to the producers that "aerial shot" might take on a different meaning when shots of the roofs on the Finsburys' home street were filled with television aerials over forty years before television was invented.
  • Uncredited Role:
  • What Could Have Been: Bryan Forbes asked Spike Milligan to appear in a cameo role but Milligan asked for too much money.

  • Michael Caine recalled in his autobiography that the houses in the Royal Crescent in Bath which posed as the exteriors of Masterman and Joseph Finsbury's houses were occupied over a century and a half earlier by, respectively, Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton during their infamous affair.
