Trivia / The Mallorca Files

Go To

  • Actor-Inspired Element: Miranda and Elen Rhys share a love of salt and vinegar-flavoured crisps.
  • Actor-Shared Background: Miranda and Elen Rhys share their hometown of Aberystwyth.
  • Blooper: The actors and production company have shared several bloopers online, including Julian Looman falling over as he runs out of the casino in 'To Kill a Stag' and Elen Rhys and Looman forgetting their lines and swearing in 'Death in the Morning'. A blooper made it into the final scene of 'Death in the Morning': Rhys fluffs her lines repeatedly and struggles to suppress her smile, while Looman's grin at this can be seen from the side as he watches her.
  • The Cast Show Off: Julian Looman has a musical theatre background and sings opera as Max in 'The Maestro'.
  • Cool Car: Max's BMW was nicknamed Bertha by the cast and crew.
  • Fake Russian: None of the Russians in 'The Oligarch's Icon' is actually played by a Russian.
  • Filming Location: The home of Niall Taylor in 'Honour Amongst Thieves' was shot in the villa of British author and former politician Jeffrey Archer. The fictional town of Cazador in 'Death in the Morning' was filmed in Felanitx and Muro.
  • International Coproduction: The show is coproduced between Cosmopolitan Pictures, Clerkenwell Films, Brit Box US and Canada, ZDF Neo and France 2. Mallorca-based Palma Pictures is also involved.
  • Loads and Loads of Writers: The show has multiple writers, only some of whom wrote for both series.
  • Looping Lines: The scene in 'The Beautiful Game' where Max and Miranda question football manager Lee Flack on his hotel balcony had to be dubbed as loud construction work started in the street outside just as filming began.
  • Multiple Languages, Same Voice Actor: Julian Looman dubbed his character in German, having to try to adopt a Munich accent as he is actually Austrian-Dutch.
  • Never Work with Children or Animals: The horses used in 'The Outlaw José Rey' were prone to diva-ish behaviour. They previously worked on the film Gladiator.
  • No Stunt Double: Julian Looman did all Max's driving scenes and the stunt driver was sent home.
  • Other: Some of the football scenes in ‘The Beautiful Game’ were filmed during a real Mallorca v. Valencia match.
  • Playing Their Own Twin: Both Domenech twins are played by Rafael Cebrián.
  • Props: For the post-bike race scene at the end of 'King of the Mountains', there was only a small amount of ice cream available, so for some shots balled-up white paper was put into Max and Miranda's cones instead. The bull in the chase scene in 'Death in the Morning' was an animatronic brought in from the Spanish mainland, as bullfighting had recently been banned in Mallorca and the only fighting bull left on the island had lost one of its horns; all shots of it are up close to hide this.
  • Quietly Cancelled: There has been no confirmation of the series being renewed, despite there being 4 episodes from Series 2 ready to be filmed and writing for Series 3 having already started.
  • Renewed Before Premiere: Series 2 was commissioned shortly before Series 1 was released in November 2019.
  • Staff-Created Fan Work: María Fernandez Ache and Tábata Cerezo made a number of video chats in character during the Covid-19 pandemic, which were posted on the show's official social media accounts.
  • Throw It In!: the 'unicorning' of Max with an ice cream cone at the end of 'King of the Mountains' was improvised by Elen Rhys.
  • Tourist Bump: Dented by Covid-19 happening not long after the release of Series 1, but local authorities on the island expected the series to attract visitors; the Mallorca Film Commission produced a tourist map of filming locations in several languages for download, with a limited amount of printed copies available in tourist locations in Palma.
  • Troubled Production: Covid-19 stopped filming of Series 2 in March 2020. Only 6 out of 10 episodes were filmed and the series was released shorter than planned.
  • Vacation, Dear Boy: Several of the cast have said that shooting on the island was part of the attraction of their roles. Phil Daniels (PI Frank Bottomley) said he 'thought it would be good fun to spend some time in Palma'.
  • Word of God: One of the production team confirmed on Instagram that in 'The Oligarch's Icon' Miranda was given the real icon to take home.
