- Deleted Role: Jack Gilford apparently had a part in the movie that was cut out.
- Hostility on the Set: While John Frankenheimer had a good time working with Alan Bates (he'd later call Bates the best young actor he ever worked with at the time, and praised not only his acting but is professionalism in how he worked with the other actors), he and Dirk Bogarde clashed - Frankenheimer was angry that Bogarde would sabotage takes by not learning his lines, while Bogarde would later refer to Frankenheimer as "Frankenstein".
- Romance on the Set: Ian Holm would claim in his memoirs that Frankenheimer had an affair with the daughter of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.
- Uncredited Role: Alfie Bass as Potseikin.
- What Could Have Been: MGM originally wanted Peter Sellers in the lead role, but Frankenheimer vetoed the idea. Frankenheimer himself wanted Richard Burton for the role.
- Shelley Winters was originally intended to have a starring role.
- The original cut of the movie ran four hours and forty-five minutes.
