- In a 1991 interview, R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe stated that the band's song "Harborcoat" was based on Diary of a Young Girl.
- In the Law & Order episode "Night and Fog", Ben Stone, who is trying to prosecute a former guard at a Nazi camp, mentions that his daughter had been reading Anne Frank's diary and thought it was fiction.
- In Last Action Hero, Jack Slater's police chief boss (Frank McRae) becomes so incoherent during an epic rant that the only few distinguishable words are "Turn in Your Badge"... and "The Diary of Anne Frank", for some reason.
- The diary was famously a major inspiration for Neutral Milk Hotel's second album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.
