Creator Backlash: MTV prefers not to acknowledge the existence of The Brothers Grunt, due to the horrible reviews and ratings the show had (MTV viewers even started a campaign to get the show canceled). The only people that seem to remember it are fans of creator Danny Antonucci (who also did Lupo The Butcher and Ed, Edd n Eddy).
Keep Circulating the Tapes: If you want to watch this show, you are better off finding the episodes on YouTube from someone who taped them when they aired years ago. See Old Shame below, as to why MTV won't release the show on DVD.
Missing Episode: The unaired episode where the Poo-Bah recalls his past as a beatnik is still considered lost media.
Old Shame: MTV doesn't want anyone to know this show existed and neither do the people who watched it as a substitute for Beavis And Butthead (as The Brothers Grunt was made as a replacement for Beavis and Butthead when the show was temporarily pulled for censorship reasons) as they thought it was a horrible substitute, though, according to the animation book, Outlaw Animation, Danny Antonucci is proud of the series and doesn't know why there's so much hatred for it.
Similar to the GEICOCavemen TV shownote which is also a footnote in the history of bad television, and was mercifully canceled after a short run, not just because of audience hatred, but because of the Writers Guild of America going on strike in 2007 and causing the cancellation (or brief hiatus, in the cases of long-running or up-and-coming TV shows that haven't been canceled) of a lot of established and up-and-coming scripted shows while reality shows, long-canceled TV shows, and sports broadcasts weren't affected, this was based on a commercial. It showed each of the Brothers grunting and straining... and then with a plop, an MTV-shaped turd plopped into yellow water, accompanied by relieved sighs. The TV show was announced sometime later; the commercial wasn't directly referenced otherwise.
The "Water of Brut" mentioned in the pilot's initiation ceremony shares its name with a brand of men's aftershave note This would explain why the brothers had such a strong reaction to it while being "cleansed", since a good deal of it appeared to get in their eyes. Given a throwaway comment Poobah makes about drinking aftershave, it's likely this was the intended joke.
